Ngo Dynasty (939-965)

King Ngo Quyen of the Ngo Dynasty

Full Name: Ngo Quyen
Title: King Ngo Quyen
Ruling Period: 939-944
Biography:

Ngo Quyen was the son-in-law of Duong Dien Nghe, the then governor of Jiao Zhou (Vietnam's name then). However, Duong Dien Nghe was assassinated by a subordinate named Kieu Cong Tien. Hearing the bad news, Ngo Quyen led troops from Hoa Chau to avenge his father-in-law's death. Kieu Cong Tien sent a messenger to Nam Han asking for help, and the Nam Han emperor ordered his son to lead the relief forces to help Kieu Cong Tien. However, Ngo Quyen first killed Kieu Cong Tien, then ambushed the Nam Han in the Bach Dang River and scored a famous naval battle that brought independence to Vietnam in 938. In 939 he proclaimed himself king.

Achievements:

King Ngo Quyen was a good ruler, who tried to make Vietnam a strong country. However, he died in 944, only after 6 years of ruling, leaving his dream unfulfilled. Therefore, his most significant achievement would be bringing independence to Vietnam after more than 1000 years of Chinese domination (actually it was colonization).

Criticisms:

None. He received a 7 out of 10 rating for gaining Vietnam's independence and trying his best to make Vietnam a strong country.
