Tay Son Dynasty (1778-1802)

Emperor Thai Duc of the Tay Son Dynasty

Full Name: Nguyen Van Nhac
Title: Emperor Thai Duc (also known as Trung Uong Hoang De)
Ruling Period: 1778-1793
Biography:

Nguyen Van Nhac was the eldest of three brothers, Nhac, Lu, and Hue. Together with his brothers, he started a rebellion against the corrupted Nguyen ruling family in the South in 1771. By 1778 he destroyed most of the Nguyen remrants and proclaimed himself emperor. He ruled until 1793 and died of anger and despair.

Achievements:

He destroyed the corrupted Nguyen ruling family in the South. He also united a divided Vietnam for the first time since over 150 years of division.

Criticisms:

Nguyen Van Nhac was a good ruler whose always treated his subordinates with courtesy and friendliness. However, he lacked ambition and was a content person. He also overlooked important matters and was a very over-confident person. For example, he failed to notice how dangerous a person Nguyen Phuc Anh was, and he always thought that he could beat Nguyen Phuc Anh easily. It turned out that he was wrong, and he paid dearly for his over-confidence. I would give Nguyen Van Nhac a rating of 5 on a scale 0-10.

Emperor Quang Trung of the Tay Son Dynasty

Full Name: Nguyen Van Hue
Title: Emperor Quang Trung (also known as Thai To Vo Hoang De)
Ruling Period: 1789-1792
Biography:

Nguyen Van Hue was the youngest of three brothers, Nhac, Lu, and Hue. Together with his brothers, he started a rebellion against the corrupted Nguyen ruling family in the South in 1771. He was appointed a commander by his brother Nhac and later a king. His talent in war could be comparable to that of Napoleon Bonaparte. Unmatched in war, he won countless battles and never lost a single one. Due to an unrepairable conflict with his elder brother Nhac, he broke away and proclaimed his independence. In late 1788, before moving troops out to the North to destroy the Chinese, he proclaimed himself Emperor Quang Trung. He died in 1792 due to sickness.

Achievements:

A commander when he was only 18, he destroyed a large Nguyen army. He invaded Gia Dinh (Nguyen Phuc Anh's stronghold in the South) 4 times and was always victorious. In 1785 he destroyed 50,000 Siamese troops in a single naval battle at Rach Gam-Xai Mut in My Tho province. In 1786, he overthrew the Trinh ruler in the North and united Vietnam for the first time since over 150 years of division. In the New Year of 1789, he routed 200,000 Chinese troops who came to help the last Later Le Dynasty ruler. He was a very enlightened ruler who tried his best to make Vietnam a powerful country. He opened trade with the West, strengthened the economy and army, and promoted the use of Chu Nom (or Vietnamese written language) instead of Chinese to give the Vietnamese a sense of identity and independence. However, he died when he was only 40 years old, unable to fulfill his dreams.

Criticisms:

Although Nguyen Van Hue was very talented both in war and peace, however, he was too ambitious. His ambition seriously weakened the Tay Son Dynasty, causing internal rivalry between him and his elder brother Nhac, who was considered the soul of the Tay Son movement. This internal rivalry made the other brother, Lu really sad, and he died of sadness and sickness. He also chose the wrong person to take care of his son when he died, which resulted in internal fighting among his generals. These series of events severely weakened the Tay Son, and gave Nguyen Phuc Anh a chance to destroy it. I would give Nguyen Van Hue a rating of 8 on a scale 0-10.
