How to proceed

APPARTEM is normally distributed as an ARJ- or ZIP-archive. ZIP is a very broadly used compression standard, if you have e.g. WinZip (or unzip, pkunzip) installed on your computer, you can use that to unpack any of the APPARTEM ZIP archives. If you do not have any ZIP unpacking software, download one of the ARJ archives instead. Unless you already have ARJ.EXE on your computer, you can download it from here, and use that to unpack the ARJ archive.
A note on ARJ.EXE and the ARJ archives: GeoCities does not allow files with the endings .EXE or .ARJ on its pages - for whatever reason. So I had to rename both ARJ.EXE and the ARJ archives before placing them on this page. ARJ.EXE is here called ARJ.BIN, so after you downloaded it, you have to rename it to ARJ.EXE (under MS-Dos: "ren arj.bin arj.exe"), before you can use it. Similarly, you have to rename the ApDemo archive, e.g. for the English version "ren ApDmE501.bin ApDmE501.arj". For the German version it would be a 'D' instead of the 'E', for the French version an 'F'.
After you are done with downloading, copy the archive onto an empty, formatted floppy disk, change onto that disk and then type:

arj x ApDmE501.arj "Enter"

for an ARJ-archive or

unzip ApDmE501.zip "Enter"

for a ZIP-archive (if you have unzip, that is; if you are using WinZip use its graphical interface as usual). The floppy you thus created is a regular installtion disk for the demo version of APPARTEM. Now just type:

install "Enter"

to start the installation program, which will guide you through the rest of the installation process.

Hard- and software requirements

For a correct functioning of this program, the computer has to fulfill the following criteria:

100% IBM-compatible PC (286 with co-processor or above)
at least 2MB RAM (memory)
at least 1 floppy drive (360KB or larger)
VGA graphic card, preferably color
Printer (for A4 or letter size paper)
MS-DOS 3.21 or newer

A mouse is desirable for a more comfortable operation, but not required.
This list is not out of date, the requirements of APPARTEM are indeed so small that virtually any computer still used today will fulfil them. If, though, the MS-Word serial letter support of APPARTEM is to be used, a significantly more powerful computer is required, to fulfil the requirement of MS-Windows and MS-Word.
