Adelphi University (temporary
position) As secretary in the Learning Disabilities College Program, I was
involved in scheduling student interviews and ordering necessary supplies to ensure that
each student had all the materials needed each semester. |
Sperry Systems (Unisys)
Initially I temped in order to type an executive's Quality Assurance document. He
was so impressed with my ability and immediate understanding of the work that he
recommended me for any future temp positions. I returned there several times for
various tasks, including inputting data on the Sperry UNIVAC. |
General Applied
Science Laboratories As a temp, I typed technical proposals on a long
term basis on several occasions for this engineering services organization engaged in
contract R&D in aerodynamics, propulsion, aerothermochemistry, wind tunnel testing
services, combustion testing services, mechanical design and fabrication of test apparatus
and models, and scientific software development services. |
Marcel Dekker This publisher of
technical material hired me to type their final copy books in my home, trade books which,
in most cases, contained chemistry and statistical-type text. |
Xerox Corporation A temporary
agency sent me to Xerox several times (after my first assignment, Xerox specifically
requested me) as a secretary/IBM Mag Card operator. Most of my responsibility
consisted of typing proposals for salesmen and letters for Personnel. |
Burmar Technical Services Burmar was
involved in many areas of technical work in the publications field. They produced
preliminary and final manuals, catalogs, flow charts and schematics primarily for the
government and defense industry, typing which I really enjoyed. |
|
Grumman Aircraft I began in
the Purchasing Department's file room where I became familiar with the Dewey Decimal
System, and then moved to Machined Parts and the typing of Requests for Quotations,
Purchase Orders and Amendments. I also helped other groups (Hydraulics, Forgings
& Castings, Raw Material, Electrical, Hardware) and trained new employees.
* I became Special Projects secretary and held that position until I left the company
after six years.
* I was also wrote Purchasing's column for the company newspaper (see picture to the
left). |
Further Experience and Ongoing Education
During the years my children were students I worked as a temp and
freelanced. As a freelancer I typed for attorneys (EBTs, patents and general),
publishers (medical textbooks and novels), military specifications (subcontractor company)
for Picatinny Arsenal, a Computer Aided Operations Research Facility presentation for
Kings Point National Maritime Research Center, and more. (See also Volunteering.) I've taken a myriad of classes including
Microsoft Office 97 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access), Corel WordPerfect, Adobe Photoshop,
Pagemaker, FrontPage 98, and internet classes such as HTML, Java, and more because of my
desire to learn more facets of software programs which I was already using.
I've also worked evenings for a webmaster and discovered how much I like web work, in
addition to publications (they're not too dissimilar). Can't get enough! |
Burning
Question
Where, oh where, or when, oh when, will I (ever) find a job which is
fulfilling and stimulating? Oh, for the good old days when I typed manuals, which I loved
the best -- doing layout and handing back a finished product was so satisfying! Can anyone
out there hear me? Rescue me from
mediocrity! |
