In the 1974 film, “Chinatown”, Roman Polanski directs a movie based on property-owning and power. The movie creates an image of how corrupt the police in Los Angeles were in those days. Jake Gittis (Jack Nicholson), is a private eye, who is asked by Mrs. Mulwray (Faye Dunaway), to find out who her husband is having an affair with. Gittis follows Mr. Mulwray around the city taking pictures of him and a young blonde woman. Mr. Mulwray is a co-owner of the company which controls the water supply that flows into Los Angeles. Mrs. Mulwray’s father, Noah Cross (John Huston), owns the other half of the water company. Gittis takes pictures from a distance of Mr. Mulwray and Mr. Cross talking to each other about business. Days later, Mr. Mulwray is found dead floating in the water channel that supplies Los Angeles. The autopsy report states that there was salt water found in Mr. Mulwray’s body, which eliminated the fact that he did not drown in the fresh water supply channel. The young blonde woman who had the affair with Mr. Mulwray was the last to see him alive. She could not be traced or found by Gittis. Jake Gittis’ case was only to find the woman who was having an affair with Mr. Mulwray; he gets too involved with this case and sleeps with Mrs. Mulwray. That same night, Gittis follows her to a house and finds out that the young blonde woman is kept in the house. Later on, Gittis investigates the water channel where Mr. Mulwray died, only to get shot at and have his nose cut by the police because he knew too much. The cop (Roman Polanski), threatens Gittis with a knife and warns him that next time his nose would get cut off. After nearly dying, Gittis goes to Mrs. Mulwray mansion to find out the real truth of the young blonde. Mrs. Mulwray finally confesses that the young woman is her daughter and her sister. Gittis discovers that Mrs. Mulwray conceived a child with her father, Noah Cross. Visiting Mrs. Mulwray’s mansion, Gittis finds that all her servants are Chinese. One of her servants, an old man, cleans a pond in the back; he says that, “the salt water is bad for the glass,” but he really means grass. As Gittis thinks about salt water, he remembers that Mr. Mulwray had drowned in salt water. Gittis confronts Mrs. Mulwray about the bifocal glasses found in the pond. She reveals that her husband never wore bifocals, but Noah Cross did. At the conclusion of the movie, Gittis, Mrs. Mulwray, her daughter, Mr. Cross, and the cops end up meeting in Chinatown, where Jake Gittis had once worked. Mr. Cross tells the Lieutenant who is in charge that he is rich and he is Noah Cross. As Mr. Cross tries to take his daughter, also known as his granddaughter, Mrs. Mulwray pulls out a gun and shoots him. She says that her father owns the police, so they can’t help her or her daughter. Mrs. Mulwray and her daughter, also known as her sister, speed away in a car. Gittis try to stop the police from shooting, but it is too late. Mrs. Mulwray is shot and killed.
