The U.S. Sixth Fleet - A Tribute
This is a photographic tribute to the servicemen and women of the United States Sixth Fleet. The city of Haifa, and its port, serve as a liberty and maintenance base to the naval vessels of the Sixth Fleet stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean. In the past 15 years, I've possibly spent more "sea-hours" on US ships - aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and submarines - than many a sailor or marine; I've certainly been aboard more vessels, documenting the men and women who spend months on end, thousands of miles away from their homes, in dedication to serving in the Sixth Fleet. This is a tribute to these men and women - the sailors, marines, naval pilots, officers, PAO's and their assistants, who've always patiently provided me with the opportunity to document their activities, at times under combat-alert conditions.
A special tribute is owed Rabbi Arye Oberstein, former US Sixth Fleet Chaplain, who, despite a posting at Fleet HQ in Naples, Italy, rarely missed an opportunity to board a Haifa-bound ship to pay a visit. Special thanks are also in order to Gila Gerzon, Haifa USO Liason Officer and to Cdr. Richard Holznek, U.S. Naval Attache in Tel Aviv, who've always been a source of assistance and co-operation, when, with the welfare of thousands of sea-weary sailors and marines to consider, having to deal with a pesty press photographer was undoubtedly the last thing on their minds. |
