Nim and Jean Little Jeannie looked at the watch her mother had given to her for her birthday. It was in the shape of a large red rose and in the middle were the gold plated hands. Her mother had just given it to her before she dropped her off to school. She pushed her large framed glasses up to see what time it was. She took in a small breath. It’s almost time she said to herself. She wanted to run away, but she couldn’t. What could she do? Run for the whole thirty minutes of recess. All she could do was wait until Ms. Kline came outside to tell Randy to stop. She looked at her watch again, but before she could think straight a hard object hit her in the back.
“Look it’s that little four eyed girl,” Randy yelled to a group of kids. He threw another rock at her. Jeannie decided it would be best to get up instead of sitting there in the grass like she always did. This time he was throwing things, instead of just merely calling
her names. Jeannie wanted to cry,
but she tried to fight back her tears.
“Stop it Randy, that hurt!” Jeannie yelled. “I don’t care. You don’t belong here, you’re different just like Leon!” he yelled back. Randy was referring to the black kid that just moved in the area, not too many weeks ago. Randy got in a fist fight with him on the first day of school, but all the school did
was send him home. Randy kept on
with the taunting, but didn’t touch him since.
However, Jeannie hadn’t seen Leon that day.
today!” Ms. Kline always seemed to come at an impecceble time, every recess. She would grab Randy’s ear and pull him inside. He squirmed and protested, but you couldn’t get out of a hold from Ms. Kline. She took hold of Jeannie with her free hand. As usual she took Randy to speak with Mr. Clyde Williams, the principal, to have a talk and Jeannie was taken to the nurse’s office. |
