Nim and Jean But their nurse wasn’t like everyone else’s. Their nurse was a man. He was a young man, probably twenty-one. It was Mr. Thomas Barton. To Jeannie he was the kindest man in the world. He had the most innocent blue eyes. She put all faith in him. He always took
care of the two. The two meaning
the only two people who ever gets beaten up.
Leon and Jeannie.
Not surprising, Leon was already inside.
He had a terrible gash on his forehead.
Mr. Barton gave the two a half smile.
.... “Leon! I’ve got good news!” Mr. Barton’s other half quickly joined the other of his smile. Leon sadly looked up as though wondering
what could this stupid white man say that could be good. “Randy’s daddy was arrested this afternoon for conspiring against the black community in this area and Randy no longer can hurt you cause he’s going to a boarding school was his daddy’s in jail!” While Mr. Barton said this he was fixing up the gash on Leon’s forehead. You could almost see Leon laugh. His white teeth showed over his dark skin. Only Mr. Barton could say something
that could make you feel better. But
Leon’s face started to frown again.
“But that ain’t everybody Mr. Barton,” he said. “Yes I know. But it helps Leon. At least you won’t get beaten up everyday looking like this. No one else has the guts but Randy.”
Leon knodded. “Well you can rest in the other room with the beds ‘til your daddy comes alright?” Mr. Barton lead Leon to the other room. He
returned and closed the door to where the beds were. “So, this is good news for you too then huh sweet cheeks.” Sweet cheecks was what he called her the first time they met and
it seemed to stick ever since. Sweet
cheeks nodded. “So what that boy do this time?” he asked frowning. Jeannie pointed to her back. Mr. Barton lifted her shirt and took a look. There were several bruises from the rocks and a several cuts. “Tisk tisk ,” was what he always said making noises with his tongue. |
