We've been away a long time, but South Africa
is making some great comebacks!

Rugby

The South African Rugby Team proved that even after a long absence from international participation, still have got what it takes to be world class players and won the World Rugby World Cup in 1995!

Yachting

Cape Town boasts one of the finest Yacht Clubs in the country, The Royal Yacht Club, which hosts the famed Rothmans Cape to Rio Race every year. Other favourite places for excellent sailing can be found on the West Coast at Langebaan.

The Comrades Marathon

The Comrades Marathon is recognized by many as the greatest ultramarathon in the world. It was established in 1921. Since the early 1980s more than 10,000 runners have participated each year. The Comrades covers 90km of hilly and challenging roads between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It alternates in direction each year.
Another popular South African race is the Two Oceans, which is hosted in Cape Town.
Ultramarathon World is a news service and archives for athletes who run distances beyond the standard marathon of 42.195 kilometres. See the Ultra Marathon Calendar for internernational marathon events.

Cycling

The Argus/Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour is hosted in Cape Town. It is an event which drew 27502 entrants on 10 March 1996 and challenged them to a gruelling 105km race.
Other significant cycling events and information on clubs and organisations are also listed here.

Scuba Diving

Due to the wild coastlines, diving in South Africa is not typically 'resort diving'. There are however, some magnificent diving sites in Kwazulu (Aliwal Shoal and Sordwana) and good wreck diving in Cape Town. The standards here are however, high and care is taken to preserve and look after our reefs.
Visit Andy Cobb's page on Protea Banks - Domain of the Shark - there's some fascinating information on sharks.

Windsurfing

Prime windsurfing locations include the Western & Southern Cape, the most popular being Bloubergstrand.
You'll also find information on where to go, environment, IFSA and IMCO World Championship event, details on windsurfing location, accommodation and equipment hire at this site
Another site which you may enjoy visiting is Wind-Souf Athrica and Sailing Spot of Interest, which includes a map for navigation on interesting places, and Windsurfer.com- not to be missed!

Paragliding

One has to just watch the paragliders soar overhead to appreciate the spectacular freedom this sport brings to these enthusiasts.
There are many beautiful sites from where they launch, one of my favourite being at The Wilderness where they fly from atop a mountain over the highway and land on the beach!
