The Boma Wedding
On 5th December 1996
I shall be marrying the man of my dreams!
It speaks from the heart
And never explains
Don't you know that
Love doesn't think twice
It can come all at once
Or whisper from a distance
Celine Dion ~ Love Doesn't Ask Why
Wayne and I met on Nelson's Island, which is near Vancouver, Canada.
I remember a good friend saying something like "You'll meet Wayne and he's going to be take a fancy to you"
and my replying "Is he married". Don replied "No" and I replied "Well, there's no problem then".
I never dreamt that that conversation would have such an impact on my life!
Over a period of some 8-9 days, I got to know Wayne as a friend, in the
company of many old and new ones. It was probably on about the third day
or so, that I started to see qualities in him that were very attractive.
As things went, part of my trip was to Seattle and San Diego, which
coincidentally are the two cities that Wayne travels and lives in.
He offered me a lift down to Seattle and San Diego, but the timing wasn't
quite right, so I accepted only the Seattle trip.
We spent three wonderful days in Seattle with his sister (great gal) and
so it began ...
We subsequently spent a further two weeks together, getting to know each
other and travelling around. I think we fell in love somewhere on Nelson's
Island, we just didn't know it then.
I subsequently returned home to South Africa ... which nearly broke my
heart ... I didn't want to leave this wonderful man, and didn't know for
sure whether we'd continue the close relationship we'd begun.
Well, we did ... and the parting in some ways, made us realise that we
didn't want to be apart and wanted to spend of the rest of our days
together.
So, we kept in touch and growing our love for each other ... probably
around 4-5 weeks after my return home, Wayne told me he was going to
marry me. I asked him whether he was going to "ask" me. He replied
"Honey, I just know we're going to be married. A couple of weeks
after that, he did ask and we pledged our lives to each other on 13 October 1996.
He arrives in South Africa on 26 November 1996 and we shall be married at
a private house, on the beach on 7 December 1996. I shall emigrate shortly
after, when we shall take our vows again and settle in San Clemente, California.
Whilst our time together has been short and subject perhaps to some
criticism, there comes a time in one's life where "one just knows". Our
values and principles are absolutely entertwined, as is our love and
respect for each other. There can be no other building ground better
than this. Above all, we're friends and can laugh and cry together and
our thoughts turn to only devoted love for one another.
I believe I have been truly blessed with this man of mine and have a firm
belief in romance, and commitment and the joy of loving someone without
reservation.
A photo of us
in Olympia taken on the day I left for home.
"I'll paint a sun to warm your heart
Swearing that we'll never part
That's the color of my love
I'll draw the years all passing by
So much to learn so much to try
And with this ring our lives will start
Swearing that we'll never part
I offer what you cannot buy
Devoted love until we die"
