Everything Chinese -- Don't Buy !!

Update - December 1997

News! A Hope solo album? An update on the Spiritualized project.

  • New articles & reviews in the newly-dubbed Press section
  • More Concert reviews and a Among My Swan Tour schedule
  • Message Board is dead (for now)
  • All my e-mail files were wiped out - Help me!

Yes, I've awoken from my slumber.

First of all. I have some interesting new information on what Hope might be working on next. Check out the News of Hope page.

You may have noticed the revised graphic on the opening page--it's a little smaller, so that should make those with slower connections happy. And no, the name of this site has not changed to "Everything Mazzy Star" (still "Everything Mazzy") -- despite what the new logo may seem to say at the moment. The word "Star" to supposed to go through some animated gymnastics, but I've yet to get the time to actually design the animated GIF. (It's going to be a small animation--it shouldn't take too long to load. Promise.)

You may also have noticed that the Message Board hasn't worked for awhile. I'm sorry to say that the host of that "free" service disappeared without notice and all the messages on it were lost. (You do get what you pay for, generally.) I hope to have a new, improved Message Board/Forum up soon.

And speaking of getting what you pay for: Another free service, GeoCities, hosts this site and they recently decided they needed more advertising revenue. More ad revenue is closely tied to increased visability--so forcing people to sit there and stare, waiting for your ads to build, was the way to go, they figured. Hence, those annoying advertising boxes, ("And now a word from our sponsor"), which pop up in the upper left-hand corner every time you log onto this site.

They're within their rights--they have to get money from somewhere in order to survive--but I also have some rights. Among them, the pursuit of happiness. And I ain't happy. The pop-up boxes bug me. So I'll probably be taking this site somewhere else, fairly soon. Freedom of movement is also a right. (But, rest easy, they'll always be a notice at this location informing you of the new address.)

Almost forgot. Some details about the new stuff:

Someone once asked me if David Roback had ever spoken about his guitars. Usually, you can't get musicians to shut up about their instruments but Mazzy Star is different, we all know, and I'd never read any details about his selection of axe. Until now. I just added an interesting 1994 Guitar Player interview--he talks about his playing philosophy and the subject of guitars does come up. His weapons of choice? A Martin 000-28 and, of course, the Fender Telecaster.

I've also added a few more newly-found articles, album and concert reviews, and a Swan tour schedule. And all of these can be found in the new "Press" section (the page formerly known as "Articles."). The new name is more inclusive, I felt. And the Articles page was getting too big so I''ve split the it into 2 pages, based on age.

Lost E-mail
On December 17, 1997AD my e-mail program committed suicide--it corrupted itself, crashed horribly and took out all my e-mail files with it. In other words, every piece of e-mail I had received & sent since May 3, 1997, along with my personal address book, is now gone--erased--and it's not recoverable.

So, if you've ever sent me any e-mail, for any reason, please Read This.

Help Wanted
If there are any animated GIF whizzes out there who would want to help me out by designing the "Star" animation thing for the opening graphic, I'd really appreciate it. I know exactly what I want--you might even say "I have a dream." But I just haven't gotten a chance to sit down and work on it. So maybe with your help, dreams really can come true.

And, while I'm begging, I have a few questions about the various audio formats on the internet (wav's, MPEG, MPEG II, RA, aiff, etc) so if you're into this, please e-mail me.

Hope you all have a nice Christmas (or holiday of your choice) and a constructive New Year.

Hope's Future Project
News - August 29, 1997
I recently received some news about a probable future Hope Sandoval collaboration. Brad Nicholson was nice enough to provide me with a few Mazzy-related details of a recent interview he did with Jason Pierce of the UK band Spiritualized.

"During the course of this interview, we started talking about future collaborations he has lined up for this year, and one of them is with Hope Sandoval," Brad related. He said it could be Jason and Hope solo, but it would most likely be Hope contributing vocals to a track on a Spiritualized EP. Spiritualized do a lot of collaborations, he said, although usually with lesser known artists. They release a bunch of EP's between albums and use them as an excuse to tour. Any collaboration would probably appear on Spiritualized's UK label, Dedicated, and a US release would be uncertain.

Spiritualized's latest CD, Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space, was just released in June and their next album is at least two years off, he said.

Brad explained that if Jason likes someone's music he'll just call them up (and Hope lives in London part-time) and ask if they want to work together, and they usually say yes. Jason, and Spiritualized, are well known and very well respected on the UK music scene.

Not being that familiar with Spiritualized, I--the webmaster guy--hit the web and found a few sites devoted to them.

EMF - the source of their musical power?

Spiritualized

Dedicated Records' Spiritualized page - with sound samples.
A better, independent Spiritualized site - with complete tour dates.
Spiritualized Electric Online - Another good one.

What do they sound like? Minimalized Brit psuedo-psychedelia with forays everywhere. If that doesn't help you out much, try these:

WAV Sound Samples (300k - 30 seconds)
Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space
Electricity
Broken heart

I thought "Electricity" sounded remarkably (in many ways) like the Jesus & Mary Chain, Hope's collaborators on "Sometimes Always." Odd coincidence? But the similarities aren't too obvious on the other tunes.

Spiritualized played some dates on the Horde Festival and toured the US this summer and fall and will be playing some European festivals next summer.

(What is this? The Everything Spiritualized web site?) I think that's probably enough information. If you want more, you know where to find it.

Updated August 25, 1997

Ask questions. Get answers. Discuss Mazzy Star. The new Everything Mazzy Message Board is open for business.

They're also known as forums, but whatever you want to call them, I like 'em. The great thing about a Message Board is that it's permanent. It doesn't just disappear into the ether or into the abyss of your e-mail files. It'll be there for you to refer back to in the future. And it's a real time-saver. You can just go to the Message Board, scan the subject titles, read what you're interested in, and get out. And you don't have to waste your time with spam, like you find on newsgroups.

So give it a look.

Updated June 18, 1997

  • Added a library full of Articles
  • Added a Classifieds section
  • Added Tabs & Chords for all songs
  • Added a preliminary Bootleg listing
  • Major Discography update

First, the site News and then the real Mazzy Star News.

If you haven't been here lately, there's a lot that's new and improved. I've done a major update to the Discography (it's now almost complete) and have added a summary of where to find all the non-album tracks. I've now included all the Mazzy-related bands (David's pre-Mazzy bands) in the discography. You guitarist-types can find all the Tabs & Chords here. I've begun my listing of all Mazzy unauthorized live recordings (Bootlegs). I need your help on this one. If you have any tapes, let me know about them. And send 'em to me--I really want to hear them.
I've added a stack of Articles and I've just received a bunch more which you've never seen before. Look for them soon.
Long ago, I said I'd have a place to trade and buy and sell Mazzy items. Now there is one--the Everything Mazzy Classifieds. Not the ideal format, but it's servicable.

Next on my agenda: the Photos. Then a major Lyrics update. (I've just recieved a copy of the "official" Among My Swan lyrics. Interesting.)

Last time, I mentioned the Mazzy Star article in FrontEra magazine. Though you can read the article at the FrontEra site, if you just have to have the actual magazine I now have some information for you. It is a California-based publication and distribution in the rest of the country is fairly limited. But you can find it at Tower Records and Virgin MegaStores throughout the land. And some Borders and Barnes & Nobles carry it. You better hurry though--that issue will only be sold through the end of June.

If you still can't find it, the magazine can be ordered direct from the publisher.
FrontEra Publishing
(213) 383-1376
Leave a message with your name, address & phone number and they'll send you out a copy. They'll bill you $3.95--that's the regular cover price--no shipping charge!

Tell them Everything Mazzy sent you.

Updated May 26, 1997

  • New Concert News + 15 Concert Reviews & redesign.
  • Updated & redesigned Videography.
  • Changed homepage LOGO again.

Let's get to the actual Mazzy Star News first, and them I'll ramble on about this site. I have received some information on Mazzy's concert schedule--the news can be found at Concerts News & Reviews--but, well, let's just say the news is not good.

Hope appears on the cover, and in an article inside of the current issue of FrontEra, a California-based Hispanic arts & culture magazine. If you can't find the magazine, you can read the article at FrontEra online.

I have finally begun my oft-promised update to Everything Mazzy. Check out Concerts or, better yet, take a look at the updated Videography if you want to get an idea of what all the pages will look like eventually.

It's each page's custom heading and all the little tool lines and design elements which eat up the time. I've switched to a two-column format and columns seen to have a mind of their own and won't stay where you put them. (At least you'll never see frames here. I hate frames. Hate working with them, hate pages with them.)

The revamped Discography and the Articles and Reviews pages should be up within days. (And if they're not, I'll refund your money.)

Let me know what you think about the new design.

Everthing Mazzy will be continually changing and improving. This is the first small graphic facelift--the tweaking will continue. My equipment has improved recently and, as time allows, I'll work to on the aesthetics some more.

A new page should be popping up here every few days. I have an update to the Discography ready to go. I have reams of Articles and Reviews and stacks of Pictures. Have some Lyrics additions, finally adding an organized Chords & Tabs and there are some new sections. I'm also writing a little section on copyright and what I think is, and isn't, fair use on the internet.

Thanks to all those who've sent me information and objects. Your names should start appearing at the bottom of the appropriate pages as they're updated. If you think I've forgotten you, let me know. It's difficult to keep track of all those little e-mails.

UPDATED April 15, 1997

  • Beginnings of the Discography

Someone e-mailed me recently and mentioned that they didn't know to whom to address their message to - the creator of this site wasn't identified anywhere. Good point. I will now emerge from behind my unintended anonymity, somewhat, and explain myself.
As Kwai Chang Kane said: I am I man--like any other man. Just a man who likes Mazzy Star. Just a guy who didn't find everything he was looking for on the other Mazzy sites. Just a guy who figured, hell, everyone's got a web site--I can do that, and there's a better than even chance I can do it better. In the great capitalist tradition.
Why do I like Mazzy Star, you may wonder?
Why is the golden light of sunset in the high mountains so beautiful? Why is the sound of the tides ebbing and surging so intoxicating? Why are the curves of a woman so irresistable? Why does barbeque smell so damn good?
Answering the question by not answering is the best I can do at the moment. If I come up with something better than "Mazzy rules!" or "Hope is a babe," I'll let you know.
