Powell, from Birmingham, led this London-based R&B band who worked from '63 to '65. They had a Tuesday night residency at Ken Collyer's Jazz Club and later replaced The Rolling Stones as the resident group at the Crawdaddy Club.

Stewart was initially employed as a second singer and harmonica player but he and Powell became increasingly at loggerheads over the fronting of the band. Eventually Stewart took control of the group and having ousted Powell, the Five Dimensions backed Chuck Berry on a lucrative UK tour but fell apart shortly afterwards.

Following the defection of his band, Powell secured a lot of live work in the Midlands, to fulfil these gigs he used various different groups, all of which he named "The Dimensions".
