KTBC-TV

From 1948 - 1952 there were no construction permits issued for TV stations while the FCC decided how it was going to assign channels for the new medium. Ladybird Johnson received the first permit after the freeze was lifted in 1952.

I was a drama major at the University of Texas and anxious to learn about television, something I had never seen. My university professor recommended me, and I got to join the crew whose mission was to get the station on the air.LBJLyndon Johnson, Majority Leader in the Senate at that time, insisted that the station go on the air early so that we could carry the traditional Thanksgiving Day game between UT and
Texas A & M.

The only way to accomplish this was to begin from temporary quarters at the transmitter. The game itself was broadcast by the network, but we had to have the station on the air to pick it up. The day finally came and we got on the air and carried the game. The entire staff went home that night to watch our handiwork except for an engineer and an announcer who was to read the news from a small glassed-in booth in the transmitter room.

At ten o'clock the engineer set up his camera and locked it on the shot of the announcer in the booth reading the news. Then the urge struck him. He went to the Men's Room and turned on the light. Since only the two men were there, he left the door open. The light from the restroom cast a perfect silhouette on the glass of the booth as the engineer unzipped his pants and proceeded to urinate. Television audience and staff watched in horror.

Phone ringing The phone lines to and from Washington were burning up that night.
