ST. AUGUSTINE LIGHTHOUSE

THE KEEPER'S HOUSE AND MUSEUM

The Keeper's House and Museum

Help out by choosing the St. Augustine Lighthouse before you shop at shopformuseums.com

Next to the beautiful lighthouse in St. Augustine, there is a great gift shop and a Visitor's Center (picture above). Since it was October 31st, there was a Halloween feeling in the museum. Our anniversary happens to be on Halloween so I decided they had decorated just for us! The fireplace was all set up for a Halloween party and it looked as though the colorful "costumes" in the wardrobe were going to be worn at that party.

After seeing the festive keeper's rooms, we went down the spiral stairs to the basement, two brick-walled rooms filled with lighthouse memorabilia. There were lanterns and lenses, displays and educational material, and a model of the orginal lighthouse complex which was destroyed long ago by erosion. Upstairs, there is an interactive computer which teaches visitors other interesting lighthouse facts.

We managed to spend a little time in the gift shop and also got some information about becoming Lighthouse Members. We joined at the Keeper's Family level and one of the perks of membership is getting Member Passes and a few Guest Passes too. Now we can take a few friends to the light anytime this year and climb the lighthouse steps again just by showing our pass.

Although seeing a lighthouse during any trip is always a highlight (pun intended) for me, the rest of St. Augustine is wonderful too. Where else could you find the kind of history that is evident in the oldest permanent European settlement on the North American continent?
