The tombs escaped the destruction by the hands of Moulay Ismail, possibly because he was superstitious about plundering the dead. Instead, he sealed the tombs and so they still reveal the opulence and superb artistry that was lavished on them in the late 1500s.Sixty-six of the Saadians, including Ahmed al-Mansour, his successors and their closest relatives, lie buried under the two main structures, and there are more than a hundred buried outside the buildings.
