Pearl Harbor & USS Arizona Memorial

Well one of the many things I wanted to do for my son, Ricky, was I wanted to take him to see and learn of historical things. This is somethin I likew to do while on any vacation. Not only enjoy myself but also to go and learn more about the area that I am visiting. One of the trips I felt was very impoortatnt for him to experience was the Memorial over the sunken ship, USS Arizona. Which was bombed during the attack of Pearl Harbor.

This is the Anchor os the USS Arizona and Ricky standing in front of it. Weight of Anchor 19,585 pounds.

This is a murial of the USS Arizona painted on the wall inside of the visitors center for the memorial.

USS Arizona Memorial entrance. It is out in the harbor and you have to take a boat there. The ship sunk from the bombing in 9 minutes with over 1000 people on board. Their bodies are still inside. Theye were not retreviable because the day before the bombing the ship had re-fueled with 1.4 million gallons of oil. There is no way to open the hull without fire(welding). The bombing took place in 1941 and oil is still visibly seeping up from the ship.

These are some of the parts of the ship that are protruding up out of the bay.

This is the memorial to the people that died here on the ship. Those are all of the names of those who died on the ship. There was one set of triplets, a few sets of twins and a father & son on board when this happened. This bombing and the above circumstances are one of the reasons why the milatary later made it so that if you were the only son, or the only surviving male in a family you may request not to be drafted so that you may carry on your family name.

It is hard to see here, but Ricky found that there was a HURD listed as one of the dead. Which is Ricky's last name. We dont think that this person is related, but one never knows. And Ricky wanted to take a picture of that name.

Some other things we saw that day on our "City Tour"

PunchBowl Crater

This is the milatary cemetary.

Iolani Palace

This is the only place in the United States of America where there was a rulling monarch. You can tour this palace by reservation only and I believe they have you take your shoes off and give you a special slipper to wear to walk through on guided tours.
