MESILLA, NEW MEXICO PART 2

But there is more to Mesilla than shopping!

In 1854, The Gadsden Purchase was signed in the center of the plaza. This treaty brought much of the Southwest to the United States. A plaque marks the spot of the signing.

Billy the Kid was once tried and imprisoned in Mesilla, but true to his reputation, escaped. The building that housed him is now The Billy The Kid Shop selling T Shirts and other tourist trinkets.

One of the highlights of our visit to Mesilla was observing hummingbirds outside another shop.

We always seem to eat in the same restaurant, La Posta. The whitewashed building is in one corner of the buildings lining the plaza. The walls are thick adobe and the floors are polished by many footsteps. The building dates back to the Spanish occupation of New Mexico when it served as an inn on the Governor's route inspecting the holdings of Spain. The entrance is in the back of the building and contains large bird cages with parrots and macaws. The birds are friendly - you can scratch their heads if you're not afraid - and several will talk to you! The menu is Mexican and their wine Margaritas are excellent. I would recommend it to anyone!
