GiensFrench RivieraBack to French Riviera index______________ Back to travels index Giens is a wonderful natural site near Toulon and Hyères Airport. It is an ancient island of the Hyères Archipelago, now linked to the coast by two strands of sand, that delimit a brackish marsh (Tombolo), a real paradise for birds. The west strand, which is protected as a natural reserve, has a magnificent beach with crystal clear water, a superb spot for windsurfs and cats. The Peninsula of Giens is also very fine, almost entirely wooded, with an interesting structure very similar to Hyères Islands. Landscape of the Tombolo from Giens
At Giens you can have a meal at "L'Eau Salée", Port du Niel 83400 Giens phone 0494589233, a very good restaurant of fish and shellfish specialties with a fine terrace in front of a superb landscape over the Islands and the pier. The Hyères islands archipelago, also called the golden islands, is composed by four islands: Porquerolles, Port Cros, Bagoud and Levant. The name derives from the magnificent golden reflexes of the rocks under the sunshine. This phenomena is caused by the geological composition of the rocks, in large part made of schist. If you look at the islands from the coast you can imagine that the are of gold. But they are a real treasure of beauty and well-being, with a mild climate and very low rain rates.
From Tour Fondue, of little interest, you can take the ferry for the Islands, departures about every half hour from 8 AM to 7 PM during the summer, but also a discrete service during all the year. This service is run by TLV, phone 0494582181, web www.oda.fr/aa/tlv.
