Toulon is an interesting city with an ancient and important harbor, and like Marseille has a multiethnic population. Take a look at the open-air market (all the mornings in rue Lafayette), at the Harbor and at the landscape from mount Faron that you can reach with the funicular.

To eat I suggest you

Chamade 25 rue Comedie phone 0494922858 (a Michelin star),
Au Sord, 10 rue Moliere phone 0494922852 (fish and shellfish),
Fleurs des Iles, 18 rue de Pomet phone 0494912677, an ethnic restaurant with specialties of Reunion, a little Island in the Indian Ocean, if you like exotic foods you must try it,
El Patio, place Victor Hugo (tex-mex).

Near Toulon you can find a quiet place to stay at Oursinieres, near Le Pradet. The road stops here and so there is little car traffic. This is a calm sea village with a little pier and a fine beach. From here there is a ferry service, only for passengers and bikes of course, for the Islands:

Porquerolles Monday, Thursday and Sunday,
Porquerolles, Port Cros and Levant Tuesday.

You can stay at the fine Hotel "L'Escapade", phone 0494083939 fax 0494083130, a little expensive but very good and quiet.

You can have a simple good meal at the Terrace du Pavillon just on the beach 1 mile from Oursinieres.

If you have time and like great wines make a tour in the Bandol vineyards.
