Using a word processor program or any other computer application has more similarities
to using a typewriter or pencil and paper than you might think. If you make a mistake

This computer gig CAN REALLY GROW ON YOU.

I have always been interested computer languages. In the ancient days of computers
I took a course in a programing language called PL1 (I told you it was a long time ago).
That was the only formal computer language course I took. I taught myself Basic and
and Pascal. I could not get into Visual C or Visual Basic. Then I discovered HTML

HTML ... JAVASCRIPT ... DHTML

HTML (HyperText Mark-up Language) is easier to learn than traditional programing
languages. So how did I learn to write web pages? I found this web site by
accident while I was searching for something else. (I don't think I ever found it!)
The home page has links to dozens of easy to understand tutorials.
(At least the majority of the tutorials are easy to understand!)
Joe Burns is the master behind the HTML Goodies web site.

HTML GOODIES

NIC'S JavaScript page allows you to cut and paste Java Scripts. Since Java Script is
much more difficult to learn than HTML these scripts are very useful.

DHTML - Dynamic HTML - Items once considered unchangeable on a webpage can now be changed
For example - font size and color. At his site you can take free downloads of all
the DHTML scripts that you want.

Click the questions below to get the answers:

What is JavaScript?

JavaScript is a scripting language originally developed by Netscape to add interactivity and power to web documents. It is purely client side, and runs completely on the client's browser and computer.

Difference betwen Java & JavaScript?

Java is completely different from JavaScript- the former is a compiled language while the later is a scripting language.

What is DHTML?

DHTML is the embodiment of a combination of technologies- JavaScript, CSS, and HTML. Through them a new level of interactivity is possible for the end user experience.

These three web sites have all you need to write your own web pages.

Now that you have created your own web page, put it on the internet at no cost. Many
internet providers are offering their customers the option of developing their own website
without an additional fee. Geocities allows 15 MB of web space and you still
have your choice of internet provider.

Found this great site that I thought you might be interested in -- MyPoints.com. It's free and they pay you with Points to visit other sites, read your email, buy stuff online, fill out surveys, etc. Then you can redeem your Points for great stuff like free rentals from Blockbuster, Eddie Bauer or Barnes and Noble gift certificates, frequent flier miles and more. They also have a free internet access. Not bad, huh? So if you join, I'll get an extra 100 Points, and you can get up to 150 Points just for signing up.

There had to be a first time! It was with "Amazon.com" that I finally built up enough
courage to use my credit card to buy books (or anything) on the internet.
UH OH! Now that I think about it, I used my credit card on day one when I signed
up for my monthly internet service.

AMAZON.COM

I should give the competition some mention. My favorite book store has always been

BARNES and NOBLE

I have found that AMAZON.COM has the best prices for books and CD's and even
the cartridge for my printer.

However, I don't buy books often. I take them out of the library. Either I'm economical,
cheap or I'm saving money for computer related expenses. I live in New York City which
has three separate library systems. The main branches are listed below:

New York Public Library:
Address:20 W 53rd Street; New York, N.Y. 10019
Telephone:(212) 621-0618
Web Address:http://www.nypl.org/

Queens Public Library:
Address:89-11 Merrick Blvd.; Jamaica, N.Y. 11432
Telephone:(718) 990-0700
Web Address:http://www.queenslibrary.org/

Brooklyn Public Library:
Address:Grand Army Plaza; Brooklyn, N.Y. 11238
Telephone:(718) 230-2100
Web Address:http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org

I do not visit the New York or Brooklyn libraries but I do loan books from the Emma Clark
Library in Setauket, NY

You might want to know what books I'm buying or taking out of the library. I'd guess
more than 50% of the books I read are SF. See the SCIENCE FICTION section below

SCIENCE FICTION

I have always been a science fiction fan - that includes books, television and movies.
I DON'T attend conventions. I like hard science fiction which is based on
scientific principles and theoretical possibilities.

I do not care for science fantasy even though the two get mixed together.
For example, books available from the

SCIENCE FICTION BOOK CLUB
contain a large percentage of fantasy books.

I enjoy being part of the STAR TREK phenomenon. I have seen every episode of all four TV
versions. Besides great characters, many episodes include good SF as opposed to dumb SF
There must be in the neighborhood of 200 Star Trek novels. The best place to explore
the Star Trek universe is at the
