COCO!
Coco was the first of our two Yorkies to be welcomed into our home. We got him from a "Pet Shop"! Doggie in the window type purchase. He weighed all of one and a half pounds. From the beginning he showed his independent spirit. He welcomed our attention, loved to play games with us, but never became demanding of our time. At times we thought he really should have a little playmate as company, but we never pursued it. From the beginning he enjoyed going for car rides, and would jump into my purse as soon as he saw that we were getting ready to go out. He was always well behaved, and never "car sick".
Coco was taken to the vet on a regular basis for all his vaccinations. Also as Canadians who traveled to the USA on a regular basis, it was necessary to have an up-to-date health certificate for him.
The first winter we had Coco, we headed south to Alabama as was our custom for the winter months. For the first couple of months all went well. One morning we got up and knew something was wrong with Coco. We had no idea what could be wrong but, Coco did not act his normal self. Soon after breakfast our very listless puppy began vomiting blood and appeared near collapse. We rushed him to the local vet, who examined him within minutes of our arrival. He told us he could not be certain what was wrong, but took blood, and stool sample for tests. He then gave him some medication, and advised us to call back for the test results in a couple of days. If Coco condition worsened we were to contact him immediately!. By mid-afternoon Coco began to vomit blood again, and he now had bloody diarrhea! Both Mike and I were afraid we were going to lose our precious little guy. We rushed back to the vet, and this time he began to ask us a few more questions about Coco's immunization program. Had he had ALL his shots and booster? "Yes, of course. Why?"
He then told us he thought Coco was showing signs of a very serious illness called Parvo-virus infection. The only other possibility he said, was that he might be suffering with the "Corona virus!" We had never heard of that disease! On this visit the doctor told us Coco had to stay at the hospital. We hated to leave him behind, he was so little, and so sick.
We were advised that if Coco improved by the next day, then more than likely he had a Corona virus infection. That night the good vet took our puppy home with him. This he did so that he could monitor Coco during the night.
For the rest of the day both Mike and I were in tears. This was a sad development.
Mike prayed and asked God to spare Coco's life. He also promised that if Coco survived, he would go out and buy a little playmate, and friend for him.
Next morning the vet called us at eight. Coco was doing much better and we could visit him later that day. Our prayers had been answered, Coco was going to be okay. We thanked God for sparing our tiny pet!
We then made plans to keep our promise.
This is how and why Angel came into our lives.
Today Coco is a healthy 9 year old, and he weighs seven pounds.
Next Angel!
