The more organized form of celebrating Lucia started in the 1920s. A Swedish newspaper, Stockholms Dagblad, held a competition to crown Stockholm's Lucia of the year. The newspaper's readers were to vote for the prettiest candidate. She was to walk through the town on the morning and during the day of Lucia followed by her tärnor (the nine or so girls that made the finals, but weren't chosen to be Lucia). This spread very quickly throughout the whole country. Today every town has it's own Lucia, along with a county Lucia and a national Lucia! Children everywhere "lussar" for their parents and sometimes from door to door (like trick or treating except no tricks and the treating reversed; the lucia offer pepparkakor and lussebullar). There is a special song sung, Luciasången. And some other songs and poems specially written for Lucia.
