So, I got this crazy idea in my head that I wanted to add a Doberman to our lives. Chris thought I was indeed loony, however, I persisted and he went with me to meet a few the the local Doberman club meeting. He liked them. Ok, so now what? Obviously, we needed to find a "reputable" breeder. Went to the shows, trials, and meetings. No one had any puppies, and if they did, they were sold or not what I was looking for. Hmmm. Then what? Eventually, through trial and error, I found Judy. Now, I've got this wonderful 3.5 year old, Quest.

Recommended Doberman Books (and General Dog Books too):

  • The Doberman Pincher: Brains and Beauty by JoAnna Walker and Rod Humpries. The Doberman Pincher: Brains & Beauty
This wonderful book was very helpful to this Doberman novice. Plus, there were pictures galore! Here is history, health, nutrition, and sporting information all in one neat package. While explaining about breeders in the US, the book also gives the German point of view. The author's years of experience in breeding Dobermans, as well as, their love for Dobermans is obvious. The book is very comprehensive. Also very impressive is the importance given to moral and ethical issues of a concern with the Doberman fancy.
  • Mother Knows Best: The Natural Way to Train Your Dog by Carol Lea Benjamin.
This is the most helpful book I've ever owned. Any dog trained this way is just a wonder to behold. Plus, it helps you gain insight into the way your dog thinks. My mom's dog Prinz was trained (by me) this way as a pup and to this day, even though they spoil him, he's an obedient and loyal dog.
  • How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend : A Training Manual for Dog Owners How to be Your Dog's Best Friend
by New Skete Monks. With its many chapters and subsections on everything from crates and leash training to dog treats and massage, training is made accessible and lots of fun. In this book, the Monks focus on physical and verbal praise in training, with a unique, step-by-step obedience course, and proper techniques for complete care at every stage of a dog's life.

Doberman Genetics:

  • DPCA Color Chart. One of my personal favorites.
This is a great chart for seeing how color inheritance with the Doberman works.
  • VetGen's page about von Willebrand's Disease. (vWD) Mostly statistics and technical info.
  • OFA Homepage. Good place to learn about Hip and Elbow Displysia.
There is also a database search engine where you can research specific dogs.
