Two wise rules:

  1. Put your feelers out -talk to friends, family, work colleagues, your hairdresser, your beauty therapist etc. Someone will know someone who recently got married, or someone’s relative may be a photographer, florist, dressmaker, taxi driver, or know of someone who can perform wedding related services and comes highly recommended. Other people will also pass on information as to who or what NOT to use or do.

  2. Don’t mention the W word. That word "wedding" bumps up the price of anything instantly. Be prepared to fib (or tell little white lies) for example, when obtaining quotes from printers or dressmakers, don’t say it is for a "wedding" tell the printer you want 80 copies of an item which you have already typeset. Tell the dressmaker you need a formal/cocktail dress or even just "a dress" altered.

The most blatant encounter I had with a wedding shark was at the drycleaners. I took my dress from the dressmakers straight to the drycleaners before the wedding to make sure it was clean of any stiffening, nervous sweat or fur from my dressmaker’s cat. I marched into the drycleaners wearing jeans and no make-up, I had 1001 things to do, so dropped the dress off in a hurry. The cost was $18.90. Post wedding, still with that honeymoon glow, I strolled into the same drycleaners wearing a nice dress, make up and respectable hair and said "I’d like my wedding dress cleaned please" and I saw the gleam in the piranha’s eyes as she said "we charge extra for wedding dresses, as they’re so delicate" and despite my angry protests ("it’s an ordinary dress with nothing fancy, you only charged me $18.90 before, etc"), charged me $35.00.
