I got into writing poetry at university, as a reaction to the efforts of some friends. Whereas they were into deep, meaningful (i.e., obscure) stream-of-consciousness poems, my own muse seemed to prefer doggerel—stuff that rhymed and scanned.

I prided myself on turning out some rather fine specimens of an underappreciated art form:

I hope that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
For should I see some verse that fine,
I'd have to say it's good as mine.
