And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, here, on this page, at Geocities, I give you Brenda Y. Yess, the Lady in Blue...
The music is from the Broadway Musical "Jekyll & Hyde." The title of the song is "A New Life." It's a beautiful song sung by Lucy, a helpless yet headstrong bar performer whom Jekyll befriends and tries to help get out of the gutters and into a new life... This song is performed near the end of the show... Jekyll is about to have a faceoff with Hyde and he isn't so sure who will end up losing, so he sends Lucy a large sum of money and a note telling her to use it to get out of there and make a new life for herself, start over, and find happiness... This inspires her! She feels life spreading through her veins and she feels Alive! In her joy she sings this lovely song... but does not see that Hyde has come in and is watching her... He is so outraged with her, and his jealousy of her love for Jekyll is so strong... that he stabs her to death in a blind fury and then slits her throat just for extra measure... Although the ending brought by this song isn't so wonderful, the song in itself is enough to move me to tears every time I perform it... I barely move other than my arms... My face is full of hope and love... My hand express the very nature of my feelings: hopelessness in the beginning, then doubt as the song progresses, then Rage and Defiance and finally Love and Hope and a Desire to Change Myself through the gift of the one man who loved me enough to try and help... And as the song ends with the long note, my fist is raised skyward and visibly shakes and my eyes are closed as I put all my soul into the song. And then, when the song ends my fist opens into a hand raised to the Gods, in Love instead of Defiance, and my eyes are wide open, ready to see the New World before me...
Hope you enjoyed it,
