I was in Kyoto, walking down "Philosophers Walk" when I encountered
these two young geishas-in-training and their veteran instructor.
The older geisha, I have heard, has recently published her memoirs under an English pseudonym. |
Sun, 13 Dec 1998 19:41:28 -0800: I
am in Hiroshima right now, just finished the museum. I am standing at a point
about 100m from the hypocenter of the atomic blast that destroyed this city.
Hiroshima was the Boston of Japan, in my opinion. It had become a major
educational center for the entire country, as well as an important port city.
It was increasingly taken over by the military over many years, and mostly
during WW2, until it became a prime military target. Got an ugly feeling
in my gut for what my country did to this city and WHY.

Hiroshima's Peace Park and museum provide a sobering experience. |
