Ko Phi Phi Longtail Boat

Spirit Houses

Ken and Sheryl flew in from Bali, and we hung out for a few weeks on the islands in the Andaman Sea.

Spirit houses.  Cal Worthington's got acres and acres...

Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 04:18:13 -0800:  Hello from Phuket. I am staying in a nice place, the far southern tip of the island, called Nai Han. A quiet little bay that escaped over-development because of a monastery that owns a big chunk of prime beachfront. Ken and Sheryl (and now I) are located at Romsai bungalows. The roaches and frogs like it too, but I don't mind the frogs. There is a place to watch sunsets here, a high promontory point at the southern tip of the island.

Get this! Today I was snorkeling along the opposite shore of Naihan Bay from Jungle Beach, I was about 4 feet under, checking out some green coral (or green stuff on some coral), when I looked up and saw approaching me, at about 4 feet and closing, a sea snake! I turned around and well, I never accelerated underwater so fast in my life (good thing because it was my life that would have lasted about two minutes if I'd gotten bit). It seemed to pursue me for a while out of curiosity, and I continued to kick away backwards, keeping an eye on it. Then it went about its way on the bottom so I followed it from above, until it stopped at a rock and proceeded to dig its way underneath it and disappeared its full 5-foot length of black and white transverse stripes.

I am at Kata Beach now, where it is "The Scene" here. Busy resort town, lots of lights, lots of shops, lots of young backpackers. [Actually, not many backpackers, mainly resort tourists from Germany.]  The [reported] rampant prostitution is not to be seen here. There are other areas that are definitely "The Scene", such as Patong Beach, where we (Ken, Sheryl and I) will probably go tomorrow.

Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 08:35:51 -0800: Last night Ken, Sheryl and I went up to Patong Beach (very crowded, bright lights, cruise ships offshore, discos, etc etc--a bit too much). So what did we do there, you ask? We went to Simon Cabaret!

No, there aren't any women in this photo.   Zip.   None.

KoPiPiLeh

Ko Phi Phi Leh, uninhabited, and restricted because Leonardo DiCaprio was there bulldozing a pristine national treasure.

Ken and Sheryl on Ko Phi Phi Don, discussing deep philosophical topics in advanced theoretical physics, or comparing their tans, with Ko Phi Phi Leh in the distance.

This tropical paradise stuff is intoxicating...
