° audience recording ;  composite, very good quality (1-8) One CDR,  “far” source from a DAT of the master.  It has been pitch corrected, heavily EQ’ed, and lightly de-noised.  Also, during some segments the gain has been modified to smooth out volume rises/drops between songs. The “near” source used to patch the cuts between songs

° audience recording ; very good quality (1-8) One CDR, I think this is the near source, source is from master DAT, there has been no additional signal processing.

This is a cleanup of a 1st gen
Based on the right channel only (the left is much noiser)
with some minor dropout repairs, a patch in Hey Joe from a
different transfer (2nd gen,), plus a little EQ and
substantial denoising.  The patch in Hey Joe is to fix a
cut in the main source that is not present in the other
(which has some non-standard cuts too, but elsewhere).
As far as I know, this is the most complete version of
                 this show possible.

Drinking Wine, Sipping Time CD-R
Last Week of the Gypsys, Suns & Rainbows: September 19-24, 1969.

“While his new band was slowly disintegrating, Jimi was working on some
new songs in a beautiful environment but with a load on his mind.  A lot
of the themes he was working on at this time never developed into
completed songs.  Titles are uncertain but Drinking Wine seems a very
good guess.”

=========================================================================================

*no, this is not the feb 1 ‘70 30+min jam with mitch. this is something
different.
3-8 is one continuous piece.

For eg., track 1 is really Key to the Highway from the ephron sessions (AKA Jimi is Tender
Too). Tracks 3-8 are really JA3-5, track 9 I think  is on Mulicolured Blues, etc. etc.

Drinking Wine, Sipping Time Alternate CD-R

Same as above, but Track 1 and Track 10 replaced with JS1 & JS2 (Ben Franklin #’s)

This disc uses the German AYE and Smash Hits vinyl, both of which used mono masters but added reverb and differential EQ to simulate stereo.  These were channel-averaged back to mono.  Also a couple of tracks from Legacy and a couple of miscellaneous sources.

You'll notice more high end on this AYE source compared with the Track and Reprise.  Also the added reverb on the German SH tracks (most noticeable on PH and Mary).

No noise reduction, EQing, or other digital manipulations. Only fade in/fade out to trim the waveform ends and eliminate all background hiss

betwn tracks. Only edit was to splice together the Country Blues/Astro Man-Gypsy Boy session (disc 1, tracks 10-13).

Astro Man-Gypsy Boy came from the version of CB that had the harm. o/d and less prominent  gtr mix. This mix is not included on these discs.

The version here was the better mix but without the ending AM-GB jam, so they are edited together

Maximum Experience CDR

This 4-disc set has nearly every mix and take (recorded prior to 5/67) of the tracks that appeared on "Are You Experienced" (Europe and US) and the frst 3 European singles.  Vinyl, CD, and tape were used as sources.  Ben Franklin numbers are given for each track.

Outtake material from Out of the Studio, Out of the Studio 2, Olympic Gold, and Are You Experienced The Sessions was examined, and the best version of each take was used.  This means stereo where available.  In the case of Purple Haze (4), there are 2 unique mixes, so both were included.

This set contains the complete AYE monos released on Track and Reprise.  Although the mixes are the same on both releases, you may hear differences in the overall sound.  Both of these are hard enough to find in good condition that it seemed better to include both.  Which you prefer will be a matter of opinion.

The vinyl tracks were manually declicked, and then subjected to a light automated de-crackle.  There is still noise in places, but some types of vinyl noise are nearly impossible to remove completely.  These tracks still sound pretty good, though.  Besides channel averaging on the mono cuts, no other processing was done to the vinyl tracks.

The chat intro to Red House (Disc 1 tr 9) was not edited onto tr 10.  This was in case people wanted to easily extract the Track mono cuts to generate a Track mono CD.  Also, the Track vinyl was used for Remember (1) and Red House (1), even though both of these have appeared on official CD.  This was so that the complete Track release would be included.  They sound pretty good despite their checkered past  :-)

Timings given are for the songs, not for the time between CD indexes.

In The Beginning CDR

The following is a post from a collector:

I posted about this before, but it was months ago. So here is my original

post, along with a few additions/corrections:

A while back, I bid on and won a still-sealed copy of the LP "In The

Beginning…The Isley Brothers and Jimi Hendrix" T-Neck TNS-5007 1970 on eBay.

I then sent it to a fellow in Maine named Allen Lowe. Mr. Lowe is a renowned

archivist and vinyl transfer specialist. His credits include work on the

recent Ken Burns PBS "Jazz" series.

His set-up is state-of-the-art, including a CEDAR system for cleaning up

vinyl noise. The end result was fantastic, virtually no surface noise, but

there were still a few minor vinyl clicks and thumps. I tinkered for quite

some time trying to fix these myself before calling in help. DB was

kind enough to lend his expertise and did an excellent job of cleaning up

these tracks.

This is being put together because it is unlikely that this material

will be re-released on CD in this form (with Jimi's guitar more up front).

All recent Isley releases containing any of this material have used the "45

single" mixes with Jimi lower in the mix.

The sound quality is pristine and I'm sure that anybody interested in Jimi's

early recordings will find this to be a significant upgrade sound-wise.

Here's the track list:

"In The Beginning: The Isley Brothers and Jimi Hendrix"

1. Move Over And Let Me Dance (Part 1) (2:40)

2. Have You Ever Been Disappointed (Parts 1 & 2) (6:20)

3. Testify (Parts 1 & 2) (4:10) -alternate take-

4. Move Over And Let Me Dance (Part 2) (2:43)

5. Wild Little Tiger (2:23)

6. The Last Girl (2:51)

7. Simon Says (2:27)

8. Looking For A Love (3:15)

I decided to include the tracks 'Simon Says' and 'Wild Little Tiger' even

though Jimi is most likely NOT playing on them. This is for historical

reasons, to keep the complete contents of the original LP in their original

sequence.

Then, to fill out the disc, some bonus tracks:

9. Testify (Parts 1 & 2) (6:01)                 45 single version

10. Move Over And Let Me Dance (2:46)           45 single version

11. Have You Ever Been Disappointed? (3:07)     45 single version

12. The Last Girl (2:53)                        45 single version

13. Looking For A Love (3:20)                   45 single version

'Testify', 'Move Over And Let Me Dance', and 'The Last Girl'

are taken from the CD "The Isley Brothers Story Volume One: Rocking Soul"

Rhino R2 70908 1991.

'Have You Ever Been Disappointed?' and 'Looking For A Love'

are taken from vinyl-to-CD transfers found on the bootleg Isley Brothers CD

"Twist And Shout & Testify" Teenage Record Co. 1004.

Finally, there are these cuts from "The Isley Brothers: The Complete UA

Sessions" EMI Records CDP 595203 1991 added for the reasons listed below:

14. My Little Girl (2:52)

15. Open Up Her Eyes (2:52)

16. Love Is A Wonderful Thing (1:55)

17. Footprints In The Snow (3:04)

18. Who's That Lady (2:48)

19. The Basement (2:03)

20. Conch (2:48)

21. My Little Girl (alternate version) (2:51)

Excerpt from Steve Roby's unpublished work in progress, which he emailed to

me:

In 1991, United Artists released The Isley Brothers: The Complete UA

Sessions (CDP-7-95203-2). According to the liner notes, eight songs from the

1/14/64 recording session allegedly with Hendrix are included on this

release, three of which were previously unreleased. Those eight songs are:

'My Little Girl', 'Open Her Eyes', 'Love Is A Wonderful Thing', 'Footprints

In The Snow',  'Who's That Lady', 'The Basement',  'Conch', and 'My Little

Girl (version 2)'. If, in fact, Hendrix does perform on these tracks, his

guitar playing is not as strong as the music found on "In the Beginning".

In 1994, singer Michael Bolten was accused of lifting portions of

the melody from the 1964 Isley Brothers hit 'Love Is a Wonderful Thing'

[from the 1/14/64 session] for his song with the same title. In a television

interview for Entertainment Tonight, Ronald Isley commented: "We wrote the

song years ago, and it was one of the early songs we did when Jimi Hendrix

was in the band." Bolten lost the case and was ordered to pay millions of

dollars.

In June 2000, The Isley Brothers; Ronald, Rudolph and the Estate of

O'Kelly, sold bonds to investors that were backed by future royalty payments

on their songs. While the specific amount wasn't disclosed, it was between

$20 million and $30 million, according to people familiar with sale. The

Isleys rejected a

competing bid for the music royalties from Michael Bolten.

My response to Steve:

"The Complete UA Sessions" liner notes say that Jimi "is probably featured

on a number of these recordings." I remember reading about this CD when it

was released, but didn't buy it because "the experts" declared that Hendrix

was not playing on the tracks in question. After reading your sample

chapter, I went out and bought the CD. And after some close listening, I do

think that Jimi could be playing on some of these tracks.

'My Little Girl': I am relatively certain that it is Jimi on this track. The

first version on the CD has the guitar mixed low, but certain parts (the

intro, and especially the bridge, approx. 1:55-2:15) have a very

Hendrix-like feel to them. The second version (the alternate take) is what

decided it for me. The guitar is much more to the front (almost like the 'In

the Beginning' LP), and the guitar is driving the band!

'Open Up Her Eyes': I don't think that Jimi is playing on this track. The

lead guitar does not sound at all like him. Perhaps it is another guitarist

in the Isley band.

'Love Is A Wonderful Thing': This song has a rhythm similar to Testify, and

there is a recurring lead lick that echoes what Jimi did a little later on

Testify. I think that Jimi could very well be playing on this track.

'Footprints in the Snow': It's hard to tell on this one. The guitar solo

doesn't seem to be Jimi, maybe it's the same guitarist that is playing on

'Open Up Her Eyes'.

'Who's That Lady': The bridge (approx. 1:00) displays a Curtis Mayfield

influence similar to Jimi's other early recordings. And some of the rhythm

nuances have a slight Hendrix-type feel.

'The Basement': The guitarist seems to be playing a 7#9 Chord. This chord is

known as "the Hendrix chord", and it can be found in many of Jimi's songs,

most prominently in 'Purple Haze'. Ventures-like lead, very stylistic,

doesn't have any Hendrix signature licks but I still wouldn't rule it out.

'The Conch': Similar feel to 'The Basement', but once again it's hard to

tell.

I think that the "experts" were so quick to judge because none of this

material was included on the 1970 T-Neck 'In the Beginning' LP (which

contains the rest of Jimi's Isley recordings). But I would assume that this

was because the Isley's did not have legal access to these recordings after

leaving UA and signing with Atlantic in early 1964, just before recording

'Testify'. Also, the guitar playing is more subdued than 'Testify', etc.

This may be because Jimi was new to the band and his role hadn't been

clearly defined yet.

I'm still not 100% convinced on all of these tracks, but I do think that the

possibility of Jimi's involvement needs to be re-examined. It would be nice

to get some concrete information about this UA session recorded in January

of 1964.

These tracks are part of the disc as I feel that even the possibility that

Jimi could be on some of them warrants their inclusion.

(note: I recently read an article in Pulse magazine where Ernie Isley

mentions Jimi being at their house in Teaneck, NJ when they watched the

Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in January 1964).
