Below are thumbnail images of a series of prints I have been working on that relate to the theme of Hawai'i. My family is of Hawaiian descent on my mother's side, and the imagery and culture of the islands have always been of interest to me.
The Kapa Amakua series of prints that you can see below is based on the Hawaiian concept of the Amakua, or spirit guardian, that helps to watch over an 'ohana (family). Amakua can take almost any form, but I have chosen some of the most common for my series of prints. My own family's amakua is the shark. On a recent trip to Oahu, my Auntie Rahna told me the the mo'o is also a family amakua.
