Dungeons & Dragons (TM by TSR, Inc.) is the great-grandfather of "modernized" roleplay gaming. Ever since the first session of "Let's Pretend", humans have engaged in forms of roleplay as an amusement. Gygax & Arneson (et al.) just happened to tap into the stream at a time when awareness of fantastic literature was riding the crest of the Tolkien craze...
D&D has now entered a third edition of the "Advanced" series, but has officially returned to the original name.
For purposes of this WebPage, I am going to include all of my comments concerning roleplaying games under the FRPG banner even though some of my favorites are rooted more in science fiction.
I began playing the original D&D game in December of 1976. (Don't laugh, I've met some of the playtesters from '72-'73 -- or earlier) Due to a rather large investment of time and money, I still tend to go back to the (A)D&D system of statistics, armor classes, and magick. The options are just much, much more extensive than a small white box with three booklets (plus the first supplement, Greyhawk), a handful of polyhedral dice, and a wooden box full of 25mm-scale figurines suggested to a college freshman long ago...
