Wargames: for this WebPage "wargames" will be defined as military (and related) simulations conducted using game paraphenalia.
I began with Avalon Hill & SPI games in early 1977, lured in by FRPG opportunities and seizing upon such classics as Diplomacy, Kingmaker, and Panzer Leader.
So, the maps were cheesy, the concept moldy, and the violence level particularly high. The game system was reasonably cheap, relatively detailed if you wanted it to be, fairly quick-playing, and a whole lot of fun. It all worked, and at a play-level somewhere between a "true" wargame, a miniatures system, and a sci-fi role-playing game. Vehicular design was not only permitted but encouraged by the system, and varying levels of skill and knowledge could be assigned or developed through continued game-play.
Highly recommended for fans of Mad Max and / or David Carradine. Or anyone who, just once, has wondered what it would be like to add James Bond-ish equipment to the family wagon...
