Nymphs are usually magical. They are elf-like creatures with great cunning. Most have ties with the nature around them. Featured abundantly in Greek myth, they come in several varieties.
Any species with no asterisk next to its name is based on traditional myth or folklore.
* These species have been created in books or movies etc or by people outside of Lan Mesinsure.
** These species were created for the Atlantis series by Lan Mesinsure staff.
Nymphs: Nymphs have no "anchor." They are simply creatures with limited magical abilities inherent in their very biological structure. In their natural form, nymphs are usually short, have pointed ears, and sparkling skin around their eyes. Nymphs were known as tempters and pranksters, as they usually caused mischief in ancient times by posing as someone's wife or husband and going off to have sex with the nearest baker. This is an example of course. Nymph magic is quite limited, and they aren't physically powerful at all, but they are quite cunning and under most circumstances not to be completely trusted.
Dryads (Wood Nymphs): Wood Nymphs have anchors to trees. They share souls with a tree, and should that tree be cut down, the Dryad usually does not survive. Dryads' archery rivals only that of the Sylvan. They have pale complexions, which may seem green in certain lights, and flaming red or golden hair. The Dryad is the only nymph race that is all-female, and procreation is done as the tree does it, not as the Dryad does. Wood Nymphs have been known to be very secretive and racist. However, the present generation doesn't seem to mind many races. Dryads are further broken up into sub races, which reflect their partner tree. Here are a some, to name a few.

Naiads (River Nymphs): River Nymphs are a dangerous race of nymph. Naiads have pale blue skin and a sadistic nature. Naiads use their water magic to destroy and cause great masses of chaos to their hated land-dwelling enemies. Naiads have a prophetic society, and it is their religious belief that it is their destiny to bring oblivion to the dryland walkers and inherit a world of rivers for themselves. True to their name, they dwell in rivers and lakes and ponds, but never the open ocean and sea. They exist only in fresh water. Here are some subraces of Naiads. Their powers only work when close to their anchor and home. When their anchor dries up, all Naiads spawned from it will die.

Lunads (Moon Nymphs): Moon Nymphs are the nocturnal nymphs. The come out at night, as they immediately fall asleep when the sun rises, and immediately awaken when it sets. Only under certain drugs will they remain awake in the daytime. This can usually be avoided, anyway, as, should they not be in daylight, they can remain awake. Lunads have greyer complexions, and usually black or dark blue hair. Lunads also have limited magic abilities. These involve minor shapeshifting, and the ability to physically transfer themselves into mortal dreams. Lunads are very fun-loving, and villages have weekly feasts, bonfires, or just parties. Lunads willingly accept any they do not perceive as threats into their villages and welcome them to the aforementioned celebrations. Lunads have deep ties to the night nature, and can usually speak with much of the nocturnal wildlife.
** Solads (Sun Nymphs): Sun Nymphs are the daytime nymphs. Except under certain circumstances, they will fall asleep when the sun sets. Sun nymphs have usually fair hair and "skin the colour of champagne" as a lovesick poet once put while watching a few dance naked in a field at high noon. Solads have some degree of sorcery in them as well. As usual, this involves minor shapeshifting, and flight. Solads, being so closely related to Moon Nymphs, usually share villages, and celebrations. Sun Nymphs are just as fun, if not more, to be around as Moon Nymphs.
* Pyrads
(Fire Nymphs): Fire Nymphs are secretive and mystical and dwell in volcanoes unscathed. Fire Nymphs appear as most nymphs do, short, pointy-eared, and otherwise human, but Pyrads possess fiery red hair, and solid orange eyes. Pyrads are pyrokinetic, meaning they can summon and control fire. Pyrads are a happy and cheerful people, but if they invite you into their home, I suggest you decline.Stellads (Sky Nymphs): Sky Nymphs are also quite commonly referred to as Star Nymphs. Sky Nymphs have sparkling skin and very rarely touch down on the ground. Sky Nymphs make their homes in the clouds and fly nonstop. Sky Nymphs are friendly and cheerful and always happy to welcome others into their homes.
Stygian Nymphs: These Nymphs are about the same appearance as normal nymphs, but Stygian Nymphs have fan-like appendages coming from their backs which can fold on command of the Nymph. Stygian Nymphs excel in forging, and create, on a daily basis, powerful talismans and artifacts. As a result, they have become a very secretive and secluded people. They live, and execute these forgings, on the hidden river of Styx, the route to which is so secret that, aside from the Stygian Nymphs themselves, the only people who know it are the Graeae Sisters. They were sometimes considered death omens because of their birthplace, but this is quite untrue.
Petrads (Rock Nymphs): The Rock Nymphs resemble humans locked in stone form, but still fully mobile. Because of this, Petrads have awesome physical strength. They also have the ability to turn inanimate objects into stone. However, living creatures are a different story. Petrads were sometimes known to masquerade as big boulders to surprise their enemies. Rock Nymphs are not entirely war-like, however, and their society revolves around shamanistic beliefs and customs which involve animal spirits and ecological harmony.
Limonads
(Plant Nymphs): Continuously confused for Dryads, Plant Nymphs are closely related to Dryads and honour an ancient alliance with them. Plant Nymphs reign over all plants (save for, of course, trees, who fall under the Dryads). Limonads can cause plants to grow faster, and can control them to attack, in some cases. Limonads dwell in massive gardens, and are seen clothed in plants and vines. They have varying hair colour, and are otherwise nymph-like in appearance.Oreads (Mountain Nymphs): Developing great tolerance for thin air and cold, Oreads are the ancient and mystic creatures who enchant the peaks of mountains all over the world. Mountain Nymphs are small, but sturdy, and usually covered in tattoos gleaned from dyes in the rare flowers and other plants that grow in their homes. Oreads have a very mystic based society, and are utterly closed to outsiders. Their motives are sometimes hard to understand, and they have borne animosity to other races on many occasions.
Hesperides: The nymphs known as Hesperides are extremely rare and live in the garden of the golden apples with tribes of pixies and the dragon Ladon. Legend has it that they were created to guard the apples from humanity. The apples are said to be very powerful when used in potions and other concoctions. Therefore, Hesperides have a strict animosity for humans, but will allow any other race to pass through their gates. Hesperides resemble common nymphs with golden hair and have been known to use the gold and silver leaves of their apple trees as decoration. There is a theory that Hesperides are the dryads of the apple trees, but they are too secretive to confirm or disconfirm it.
Alseids (Valley Nymphs): Living in secluded valleys and gorges, the Valley Nymphs live true to their name. Usually with a very magical and prophetic society, most Alseids are seers and necromancers. They welcome travelers until they are threatened, and then will use their magics to destroy their enemies. Alseids are often renowned for their mystic wars against the Naiads. Alseids have a kind of olive coloured skin, dark hair, and dark blue eyes.
Oceanids (Ocean Nymphs): Saltwater-dwelling nymphs are known as Oceanids. They dwell in the open ocean, and are therefore rarely seen by mortals. They are very abundant and very powerful. They have a very caste system which is basically a sexist one. All women are trained as sorcerers, while all men are trained as warriors. This mix can provide deadly results when in war. Oceanids are gray-skinned and scaly with silvery or greenish hair, and have gills on their backs as well as webbed appendages and spikes.
Pleiads (Nymph Guards): Once thought to be only a sect of common nymphs, Pleiads are war-hardened nymphs who are trained in the art of battle from birth. Magic is utterly foreign to them, which is very unusual for a nymph race. They wield a variety of weapons, and live usually in underground caves or ones in a rock face. They resemble nymphs utterly, save for eyes which are always a greyish tint, and a larger and more muscular structure.
Hyads (Rain Nymphs): Sometimes thought to be a race of spirits, Rain Nymphs only appear when it is raining, or shortly after or before it rains. Little is known of Hyads, even by other nymph races, as they have a completely foreign tongue, and absolutely do not understand anyone else's (or so it seems). But they do seem to use magic and science to some extent, and it is unknown where they exist when it isn't raining. Hyads have four arms and dark hair, but most of them cut most of their hair off.
