Chapter 1

The yellow blade hummed through the air. The sound was rhythmical and soothing.   Dawit trusted her instincts and lunged at the hovering probe. With a resounding thud it fell to the ground.

“Very good Dawit. You’ve come along nicely.” A voice said from behind her. Dawit flicked off her lightsaber and lifted the blast helmet. As she pulled it off, her long, reddish-brown hair fell down to her waist. She turned to see her teacher, Nefra. Nefra was old and withered, but he understood Dawit’s ambitions. “You’ve learned to control your frustration.” Nefra observed.  Feeling annoyed Dawit said,

“You don’t have to probe my mind every exercise Nefra.”

“You should call me Master Nefra. Yoda doesn’t like it when you don’t call me Master.”

“So? I’ve known you my entire life! What difference does it make if I call you Master?” Dawit said, anger teeming in every word.

“You haven’t learned to control your temper.”

“Nefra. . .” pleaded Dawit.

“Don’t you be Nefraing me. Dawit, you’re an exception to every rule of the Jedi ways. You barely were allowed to be my Padawan. You’re 15, start acting like it.” Nefra said calmly.

“It’s not my fault they didn’t recognize my ability!” Dawit cried out as thousands of pain-filled thoughts entered her mind.

“They didn’t know you were naturally gifted in mimicry and illusion.” Nefra said calmly. He tried to soothe Dawit’s troubled thoughts but she blocked him out.

“Stop that! I hate when you try to ‘help’ me! I can have my own thoughts can’t I? I try, really I do. I just don’t fit in here. If it weren’t for you I would still be mining amber on Anyota.”

“The force is strong in you, but if you don’t learn how to control it. . .” Nefra trailed off. Dawit sat down and said aloud to herself,

“I didn’t know I was hiding my ability. I was only young. I didn’t know I was shielding it from everyone.” Dawit sat down and put her head in her hands.

“You will learn in time.” Nefra said as he turned to leave.

“I will learn, I promise Nefra.” Dawit said. Nefra left Dawit to her thoughts. He went into the Jedi counsel room. As he entered the room, the council turned to look at him.

“Your report on Dawit have you?” Master Yoda asked.

“She has progressed well. She is showing great signs of improvement.” Nefra said as he began his report.

“Hiding something you are.” Yoda said.

“Dawit is exceptionally skilled,” Nefra paused, “she just needs to learn how to control her emotions.”

“Control her emotions she does not.”

“But she will learn.” Nefra said defiantly. He was ready to defend Dawit to the last word.

“I sense much hope in you. Train her better can you?”

“It is not the training she needs, but the guidance. I know her too well.”

“Away with too much you let her get?” Yoda countered.

“Her lightsaber is complete. It is the only yellow blade that I know of. She has excellent fighting techniques.”

“She was too old to begin the training.” Yoda said.

“You say that of everyone.” Dawit said as she entered the room.

“Be here you should not.” Yoda told her.

“I know. I also know you don’t want me here.”

“You should rest. Tomorrow you will hear of the council’s decision.” Nefra said, pushing Dawit out the door.
