Chapter 7
“For
her? You’ve got to be kidding.” Fian said to Obi-Wan. The mess hall was noisier
than usual. There were rumors floating around about Dawit. The popular rumor was she had
gotten kicked out. Another rumor was that she quit. Obi-Wan knew the truth. Fian
interrupted his train of thought by saying, “You
don’t mean finding her brother? He is on a dark path. I think it rubbed off on her.
He’d kill us the first chance he got.” “Then
you’re saying you don’t like a challenge?” Obi-Wan said, hoping to goad
Fian into helping him. “I
like a challenge when it doesn’t involve my gills on the line!” “I
wouldn’t help her, she’s as crazy as her brother.” Makatosia said. “She
is perfectly sane. Anyone whose mind-wipe fails acts a little tipsy for awhile.”
Obi-Wan said, as if trying to make up for Dawit’s shortcomings. “She’s
been ‘tipsy’ for over two years, ever since her brother left. She’s a loose
cannon! Don’t you see that?” Makatosia was afraid he’d get dragged into
this ‘mission’ of Obi-Wan’s. “Can’t
you just help me get into the record room? I need to check out her file. That’s all,
nothing more. Please guys?” “I
still don’t want to do this.” Reluctantly Fian added, “But I’ll help,
not for her. I’ll do this as a favor.” Makatosia consented saying, “You
owe me one. A very big one. If we’re
caught you know what will happen.” “I’ll
take the rap for it guys, don’t worry. You can scatter at the first sign of trouble.
How about eleven tonight? By the fountain.” “The
fountain at eleven. Got it.” Uneasily Makatosia slurped down his soup. It was going
to be a long night. Fian’s gills quivered, as if echoing that thought. Without saying
a word to either Fian or Makatosia, Obi-Wan
got up and left the table. He headed down to
the Temple. He wanted to see how Dawit was doing after he lastest vision. He feared she
couldn’t take much more abuse. She’d slipped into unconsciousness after yelling
at Yoda and the Council. Qui-Gon told him to leave and he had. He’d run down to the
mess hall to tell his friends of his plan. The Temple doors slid open and he stepped
inside. Dawit was still on the ground. Her head was propped up and she was barely
regaining consciousness. The scars were gone. It
was as if they had been erased from her memory. She
moaned as she awakened and threw up. Sasah was by her side healing her with the Force. Instinctively he ran to her. Qui-Gon stopped him. “She
needs her rest. The day has been long and hard for her. You shouldn’t see anymore.
Tomorrow will be a long day. I have a new lesson for you.” Obi-Wan headed for the
door. He hesitated when he saw Dawit toss and turn as she moved back deeper into her past. |
