The Internet & Homeschooling
The internet is a vast place. When most people think of the internet, they think of the World Wide Web. There is much more to it than this graphical area. There are the IRC channels, for example, where you can chat with people from all over the world. There are interactive text areas, called MOO's & MUD's, where people do everything from play games together to take classes. You can exchange information with others through newsgroups or through e-mail interest groups which come straight to your mailbox. The internet is so vast, you can cruise day & night for years & probably not see it all.
There is also a lot of add-on software. Some programs, such as Pow-Wow, allow you & several friends to cruise together. There are 3-D chat areas; some are limited to certain addresses, but others let you turn almost any area into a chat area. There are programs that allow you to chat with your own voice & programs that allow live classes & interaction with others through voice & video feeds directly into your own home.
What does this all mean to you? The internet is whatever you make of it...use it well & it can be the most powerful tool in your homeschool for support & information. You can tailor it to what your particular needs are. For instance, if you are new to homeschooling, you can chat with other homeschoolers via IRC channels or message boards. You can cruise the homeschooling sights to find a support group in your area, order catalogs & curriculum, or even take classes yourself. There are even schools on the web which you can use for your children to take classes in an area you may feel insecure about teaching!
My purpose with this site is to help you get started seeing the possibilities & introducing you to a few. Once you are comfortable with the internet, you will be surprised at how much you can find on your own!
