The predominate religion in America today is Christianity. This has been historically true from the founding of America until the present. Christian beliefs have been a major influence in the forming of America. The Bible has been the guiding book of most of its leaders and its documents. However, like in most countries in the world, America also has had leaders who use religion for their own political ends while not living according to its teachings.
America has had its moral ups and downs. During the low times, the religious community of Christians has come together to pray for the nation and confess their sins. True Christians have quietly gone to the streets and their neighbors to share the life transforming power found in a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. This has received little publicity, yet its influence can be documented.
There were three great revivals (periods of religious awakening), which pulled the country from its wayward life. These revivals were so great that those who sold alcohol quite their business and went into other trades. Most of the social reforms, now a part of American society, were started as a result of the revivals such as hospitals, orphanages, and schools. For example, in 1858 in New York City there were 6,100 Christians. One week after the revival came to New York City there were 10,000 more Christians. The revival was silent with no demonstrations, but its effect was great upon the people as they began seeking God. The people confessed their sins, sought to make restitution for wrongs, cleaned up their language, addressed issues of neglect in their communities, and began attending church and meetings to study the Bible and pray. The effect of the revival was repeated through out the USA.
True Christians realize that God is far from most of the hearts of people today. Many people 40 years or older can remember when locking doors and cars was not done. Now many Christians are gathering together to pray for this nation and confessing our sins. You will find Christians going out quietly on the streets and in their neighborhoods to share the life transforming power found in a personal encounter with Jesus Christ.
