Jonathan first married Bier. Born in 1789 in TN.

Living 1850 in Sullivan Co., TN

They had one child:
1601 i. Abijah B. (~1826-)

On 16 October 1861 when Jonathan was 73, he second married Mary Hawley, in Sullivan Co., TN. Born in 1811. Mary died in Bristol, Sullivan Co., TN, on 27 March 1885; she was 74.

William married 2nd wife, Sarah Welch, in 1864 in Vigo Co., IN. She was born abt 1823 and died in 1873.

William was born VA; moved abt 1811 to TN; moved abt 1828 to IN.
Enlisted in TN under Gen. Jackson and fought at Horse Shoe in War of 1812-13 and again in the Creek Indian War.

William's War of 1812 Pension Application gives proof of his marriage to Ellen Holt, and of his migration from TN to IN. He seems to be the William on the 1830 Clay Co., IN, census and the 1850 Sullivan Co., IN, Census. Was in Vigo Co., IN, in 1855 and again in 1871. May have returned to Sullivan Co., IN, before his death in 1872.

Circumstantial evidence indicates William's father was the George Bucklew on the 1789 Montgomery Co., VA, tax roll. Apparently George lived in the part of Montgomery Co. used to form Wythe Co, VA, in 1789. George and Catherine were in Wythe until 1811 when they moved to Knox Co., TN.

"History of Clay Co.,IN" states, "The first wagon ever seen in this part of the country was that of Joseph Holt, who came here from TN on a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Edmonson and Mrs. Buckallew, in 1830."

1850, Sullivan Co., IN, Census. Joel A. and William L., the eldest sons, were not in the home.

1851, 3 Jan; Sullivan Co., IN; Declaration of War of 1812 Service for Bounty Land (handwritten): William Buckallew, 60, a resident of Sullivan Co., appeared ... stated he was the same william Buckallew who was a private in Nicholas Gibbs Company in the 2nd Regt. of East TN Militia commanded by Col. ?Daniel/Samuel Bunch/Burch. He was drafted in Knox Co. about 24 Dec 1813, served 4 months, and was honorably discharged at Washington, Rhea Co., TN, in May 1814. Buckallew made the declaration for the purpose of obtaining bounty land as provided for in Act of 28 Sep 1850.

1855, 31 July; Sullivan Co., IN; Declaration for Additional Bounty Land (form): Wm Buckallew, 64, a resident of Vigo Co., IN, appeared ... and stated he had received 80 acres of land under the Act of 28 Sep 1850, "which he has since legally dislposed of, and cannot now return." ... as provided for in Act of 3 Mar 1855.

1871, 29 Apr & 8 Nov, Knox Co., TN; Declarations for War of 1812 Pension, Vigo Co., IN: William Buckallew stated he had been drafted for the war in Knox Co., TN. Also, that he had married Ellen Holt there in 1815.

1871, 29 Apr; Vigo Co., IN; [handwritten] Declaration for War of 1812 Pension: William Buckallew appeared before John R. ?Bledsoe, a notary public, and said he was aged 81 years, a resident of Vigo Co., IN; that he was married, and that his wife's name was Sarah Welch, whom he married in Vigo Co. on the [blank] day of 1864. The declaration went on to state he had served the full period of 60 days in military service during the war, and that he was the identical William Buckallew who enlisted in Capt. N. Gibs company, ?2E. TN regiment, ?Dohertys Brigade at Knox Co., TN, in Dec. 1813. He was honorably discharged at Washington, TN, in 1814. He was at the battle of the "Horse Shoe" on the Talapoose River, went from there to the "hickory grounds," then to Fort Williams, and finally to Washington, where he was discharged. He said he had drawn county lands under the acts of Congress, but that he was not receiving a pension under any previous act. Stated his post office was at Lewis, and his abode was in Pierson Twnshp.

Frederick Jackson "Jack" Buckelew, citing "Update War of 1812 Pensions (1992)": "William Buckelew, born in SC, married Ellen Holt 12-20-1815 in Knox cty. Tennessee. Served with Nicholas Gibb's TN. Militia. Lived Sullivan and Vigo Cty., Indiana." (My comment: Other sources give William's place of birth as VA.)

The 1909 Clay Co., IN, history states, "...after James' second marriage he moved to Middlebury where he died at the age of 80." Lastly, "...grandfather, Jonathan Buckalew (Buckallew) came from Scotland and settled in Virginia. Mahala Holt was born in Wales and came with parents Joel and Elizabeth Holt and located on Clinch River, Knox County, Tennessee. The parents lived there the rest of their lives."

From Arlo Baty's notes taken from A HISTORY OF CLAY CO., IN, p.470: "Among the sturdy pioneer colonists of Clay county from Tennessee who settled in Harrison Township in 1827 was James Buckallew, who, after a residence of four years, became dissatisfied, loaded up his family and effects and started for Missouri. Having gone only as far as the neighborhood of Terre Haute, he took sick and was compelled to stop there for a time, luckily finding an empty cabin, of which the family took possession. During the time of his sickness both his horses died of what was pronounced milk-sickness, and when he had so far recovered as to be able to renew the trip he had no means at command for moving on. Abandoning from stern necessity the removal to Missouri, he retraced his course, came back to Clay county and entered land in Lewis township, where he lived to the ripe old age of seventy-eight years, his wife having previously died. She contracted the disease which caused her death during the year's temporary residence in Vigo county. James Buckallew was the father of ex-County Commissioner William L. Buckallew, of Lewis township, and Joel H. Buckallew of Butler, Missouri, who was one of the earlier merchants of Middlebury."
