1681. Samuel Buckalew. Born on 1 February 1812. Samuel died in 1896; he was 83.

1682. Abraham Buckalew. Born on 10 April 1815. Abraham died in 1892; he was 76. Buried in Elk Ridge Methodist Cem., Chester Co., PA.

1683. Elizabeth Jane Buckalew. Born on 15 September 1817 in PA. Elizabeth Jane died in Chester City; Delaware Co., PA, on 14 September 1887; she was 69. Buried in Behind Old Union Meth. Ch.; Brookhaven Rd.; Nether Providence Township; Deleware Co., PA. Nickname: Eliza Jane.

May be same as Sara Jane.

Eliza and her husband, Lewis B. CHRISTY moved around a lot. They were married in 1839, resided in Lower Oxford Township, Chester County, PA. This is just outside of Nottingham, which makes sense. In 1850 however, they had moved to Nether Providence / Springfield area of Delaware County. In 1860, the census states that they were residing in Aston Township, Delaware County, PA. Come 1870, they had settled in the City of Chester, Delaware County PA. Eliza kept house, and Lewis was a shoemaker.

On 6 June 1839 when Elizabeth Jane was 21, she married Lewis Benjamin Christy , Sr.. Born on 26 September 1807 in PA. Lewis Benjamin died in Chester City; Delaware Co., PA, on 15 July 1882; he was 74. Buried in Behind Old Union Meth. Ch.; Brookhaven Rd.; Nether Providence Township; Deleware Co., PA.

1684. William Frank Buckalew , Sr. Born on 27 March 1820. William Frank died in Pickering, Chester Co., PA, on 15 January 1875; he was 54. Widow's Pension Application states that he "contracted a cold which settled on his 'kidneys and stomack' at Montgomery, Alabama -- and he suffered from the same until his death which caused his death.". Buried in Cumberland Cem., Gradyville, Deleware Co., PA. Occupation: Papermaker.

Buriel close to Media, PA.

On 21 March 2001, Donna Husted Levy wrote: "The letters that my mother provided show that William and Lucien had a marriage that included good communication, his letters peppered with 'I'll tell you all about it when I get to camp'...(from his letter on the way to the Civil War) etc. That date of that letter was only a year and a half after they were married, according to the information included in the Web site."

On 5 Jan 2002 from Donna: "Regarding the marriage of William F. Buckalew, according to both his pension file and the 1860 census in Trenton NJ, he was married first to a 'Catherine S.' (maiden name currently unknown) and they had the following children: Babez, Catherine, Mary Jane, Susan and Charles. His first wife Catherine died on December 30, 1861. There is no indication of what happened to his children from his first marriage."

William Frank first married Catherine S.. Born about 1822 in NJ. Catherine S. died on 29 December 1861; she was 39.

On 12 April 1863 when William Frank was 43, he second married Lucina Lungren, daughter of Alfred Lungren & , in Trenton, Mercer Co., NJ. Born about 1837. Lucina died on 25 March 1915; she was 78. Buried on 29 March 1915 in Riverview Cem., Trenton, NJ. Nickname: Lou.

Appearing in Lucina's Widow's Application for Pension, is a marriage date, 24 May 1863, different from the 12 April 1863 on a marriage certificate. Descendant Donna Levy has the theory "that they may have been married privately at first, then publicly second."

Lucien was from Trenton or Princeton, NJ.
IGA has her surname as "Lungran."

"On April 12, 1863, William F. Buckalew married Lucina Lungren in Trenton NJ. There are two marriage dates for William F. Buckalew and a Lungren woman, the second date in May of 1863. I have a theory that they may have been married privately first, then publicly second. His pension file reflects the inconsistency.

"Lucina's father was Alfred Lungren, also a paper maker. It turns out that paper making was the Lungren family business, beginning in Pennsylvania in 1799. The Lungren's are written about fairly extensively in the local history books, and many of the Lungren's are buried in Old Swede's Church in Philadelphia.

"Lucina and William had four boys-William Frank Buckalew 2nd, born February 10, 1864. Twins, Edward Shortledge and Alfred Buckalew born February 18, 1866 (Alfred died November 16, 1887) and John H. Buckalew, born April 26, 1868, died April 1897 in Philadelphia. He is buried in Northwood Cemetery with his
brother William 2nd, my grandfather, and other family members. My mother also brought me an old tintype of a little girl that according to your web site may have been named Laura Buckalew, but my theory is that she passed away long before the pension papers were filed and she was not included on his list of children."

1686. Thompson McCarrell Buckalew. Born about 1823. Thompson McCarrell died in Mercer City, Pulaski Twp, PA, on 12 March 1880; he was 57.

Thompson McCarrell married Catherine Permelia Malone.

1688. John W. Buckalew. Born on 14 June 1826 in East Nottingham Twp, Chester Co., PA. John W. died in Chester Co. PA, in April 1870; he was 43.

Another source give birth year as 1824.

John died in an accident at the age of 44. He was a laborer. [Mortality Schedule , PA 1870, Page 56]

On 15 June 1848 when John W. was 22, he married Rachel Anna Whiteside, daughter of George S. Whiteside (8 November 1805-5 May 1875) & Ann Tarry (6 December 1810-1839), in Chester Co., PA. Born on 20 March 1830 in Birmingham Twp, PA.

Step sister of Isaiah Whiteside (#3004).

Rachel Was eldest of George's (1805) children. She was a
Buckalew before she was a Howard and was a Whiteside by birth. She
settled her Father's affairs and arranged for his burial at
Phoenixville, PA in 1875. George had four wives and his first three
provided him with many children so that there were many step-brothers
and sisters. Rachel came from Ann (Tarry) Whiteside and was born in
Chester County, PA.

Les, after looking at the data on John and Rachel (Whiteside) Buckalew , I am convinced that it is incorrect. From Whiteside family letters, etc; I know beyond doubt that Rachel was at Phoenixville, PA to help sell off her father's meager possesions and then to bury him. I also know that she was not only George's eldest child but, also the closest to him. It was not until after his death( and her marriage to John Howard) that she moved to Indiana. My understanding is that she ran a boarding house out there with her new husband John Howard and that when she died her youngest son was with her. Please note that John Buckalew didn't die in either Florida or Indiana. Because he worked as a laborer and stuck close to his family, I can't see how his children were born anywhere except East Nottingham, PA or that vicinity. Also note that John is buried near his family. I have nothing that shows that he and Rachel were separated before his death. To the contrary, it appears that they
stayed pretty close to have had so many children and would not have had the resources to travel to the places that you show as their birthplaces. My best regards, Warren

...That birth in Florida just stood out as being impossible instead of improbable. However the Miami County, IL. location might have generated the confusion and turned into Miami, Florida. That happens with oral stuff. It happened to me in the early years when I looked for my George Whiteside in Birmingham, England because someone had mentioned Birmingham as his birthplace then recorded it as fact. It was Birmingham but, not England. It was Birmingham Township, PA and a later marriage certificate verified that George was born in America (PA).

1689. Howard Carver Buckalew. Born on 6 January 1829 in East Nottingham Twp, Chester Co., PA. Howard Carver died in Wilmington, Del., on 29 December 1911; he was 82. Buried in Elk Creek Meth., Wilmington, Del.

Stayed in Chester Co., PA, and lived near Mt. Vernon.

In letters he called his wife Sally. They lived around Oxford, PA, close to the area where he had been born.

As his father, Howard Carver was a laborer. When the Civil War broke out he was drafted and in Oct. 1862 he became a private in the 175th PA Regt, Co. E, under captain Woollens. Howard was the sole musician, probably the bugler. During the war his wife Sally and his children were put on the relief roles. In a letter to home he asked Sally to get help in ploughing and planting the field. His letters were from New Bern, NC, where he was with Burnside's army.

He returned to PA and lived there until about 1902 when at the age of 73 he moved to Wilmington, Del., probably to live with his daughter Ann Elizabeth who had married Andrew J. Morris, another Civil War veteran. Howard died December 29, 1911.

An obituary in a 1 June 1912 newspaper read: "Howard Buckalew, whose parents were among the first members of the Elk Ridge Church, and who was a member of the church more than hald a century passed away. The funeral services were held in the church on Tuesday, in charge of the pastor, Rev. Dr. Strayhorn. He preached a helpful sermon and spoke of the commendable traits of character possessed by the deceased. Mr. Buckalew was much beloved in the community."

Mil. Svc.:: Transcript of Application for Soldier's Family Relief:
"Robert P. Greenleaf, of the township of Elk, applies to the Board of Reli3ef of Chester Co., on behalf of the family of Howard Buckalew, a citizen of said township, for support under the Act of Assembly of May 15th, 1861, entitled 'an Act to create a loan and to provide for arming the State.'

"The said Howard Buckalew was enrolled and mustered into service under orders from the Governer of Pennsylvania in October 1862 and is a Private in Company E of Capt T. T. Woollens in the 175th Regiment of Pennsylvania Drafted Militia, under command of Colonel Dyers.

"The said family consists of his wwife, Sarah J. Bcukalew, aged 28 years; 4 children--Johh A. Buckalew, aged 10 years; Ann Elizabeth Buckalew, aged 8 years; Phebe Jane Buckalew, aged 5 years; Mary Emma Buckalew, aged 11 months.

On 27 May 1852 when Howard Carver was 23, he married Sarah Jane Howard, in East Nottingham Twp, Chester Co., PA. Born on 28 May 1834. Sarah Jane died on 2 January 1896; she was 61.

Her brother, John T. Howard, married her brother-in-law's, John Buckalew (1826-1870), widow, Rachel (Whiteside) Buckalew.

They had the following children:
