 We meet Gilbert as a smart, 13 year old schoolboy who likes to tease the girls. At school he tried to get Anne's attention by pulling her braid and calling her carrots. He did get her attention and most likely a headache as well because Anne got so furious that she took a slate and broke it over his head. After that she made a vow never speak to him, which she kept for five years. During that five years Gil was always trying to get her attention and tell her he was sorry, but Anne refused to aknowledge him.
