 Marilla Cuthbert, an old maid living with her brother was quite upset when Matthew brings Anne home from the station. She was fine with the idea of raising a boy, but not a red-haired chattering girl like Anne. Needless to say they kept Anne after a trial period. Marilla certainly had her share of shocks and surprises with Anne around. Colleen Dewhurst added a lot to the character of Marilla. No one else could have played her and given us the performance she did. Being Canadian and a fan L.M. Montgomery helped her bring life to the character. When she was given the chance to take the role she went against her agent's advice and took it. I'm sure many of us are glad she did Colleen Dewhurst died on August 22,1991 of cancer. She was 67. |
