Guidelines for Exterior Staining

So it's time to paint your home? Please make sure to use a color from the cluster association palette. The palette technically consists of "stains", not "paints". To confirm the correctness of your product and color selection, please call the Reston Association Covenants Administration office at (703) 437-9580 PRIOR to buying stain or beginning work to make sure you get the correct brand and color of stain.

The most recent version of the color palette was approved on October 5, 2004. Siding colors are from the Olympic brand Solid Color Stains palette, and can be obtained at Lowe's. Door colors are from the Duron Exterior Accent palette, and can be obtained at the Duron store at 495A Elden Street, Herndon, VA 20170. Duron will give you contractor pricing if you tell them you are with the Birchfield Woods Cluster Association.

Note that you can use any approved siding color with any approved door color. There is no longer a requirement to use specified color pairs. Also, note that all trim (soffits, window trim, facia, rakeboards, etc.) and fences are to be painted Pittsburgh Paints solid color stain "white".

If you want to change the color of your house, you MUST call the Reston Covenants Administration office at (703) 437-9580 to register the new color (see the Reston Design Guidelines for Exterior Paints and Stains). Note that you may not stain your house the same color as an adjacent house.

Siding Colors (Olympic Solid Color Stain) Door Colors (Duron Exterior Latex Paint)
Taupe Aspiration
Cocoa Farmhouse Red
Parchment Cobblestone Grey
Monterey Gray Chadwicke Tan
Beachwood Pittsburgh White
Heritage Blue Graystone
Blue Blood
Woodland Green

If your house is currently a color that was on a previous version of the approved palette for the cluster association, you are permitted to restain using that color. However, the primary reason for updating the palette in the past has been that some colors were no longer commercially available, so you should consider using a color from the current palette.
