As you probably can guess from the title, I can't carry a tune in bucket with a lid on it. As a matter of fact, when my girls were tiny and I'd sing them lullabies, they would ask me not to sing. (There goes the mother of the year award.) But that certainly doesn't hinder my love for music.
My love of music is probably in the genes (and not the one's I'm wearing). I had two great uncles who played in John Phillip Sousa's band. But I can honestly say that the one person who had the biggest influence on me was my high school band teacher (thank you for wonderful teachers.) His name was Jack Hatcher and as a young man he was a drummer with Doc Severson. He taught me the beauty of all types of music. I actually was very good on the tenor sax.
And I could never short change the influence of Kansas City on me. After all, who can't sing the song "I'm goin' to Kansas City"? The Jazz Hall of Fame is set to open at 18th and Vine the last of June. When you think of Prohibition, gangsters, and jazz, you automatically think of Kansas City (Chicago is a little more famous for 2 out of 3, but who's counting?) We still have fantastic clubs with wonderful bands with all sorts of influences. As I progress with this, I plan on adding more about our local music scene.
I would rather listen to great music than eat. And my taste runs the gamut. I can even do small amounts of rap, heavy metal and country. If it's good, it's good.
