Records for our branch of Whiteings would seem to date back to 1620 Robert Whiteing, known to be a "Yeoman", or land owning farmer, in a number of Yorkshire Co. parishes. He has been found mentioned in a memorandum in the nuncupative Will of William Carleton, of Hull, 1639...." did give unto Thomas Carleton his brother the remainder of xxxli owing to him by Robert Whiteing of Hornsea Burton, in Holderness in the County of Yorke, husbandman, ..." There is also a land deed dated 1649 which conveys title to land at Cowden (in the parish of Mappleton, north-division of Holderness; 15 miles from Beverley), from Hugh Bethal, Esquire, of Rice, to Robert Whiteing, "yeoman of Hornsea Burton", Yorkshire Co., age estimated at about 30 years at the time. Although "Hornsea Burton" no longer exists ( this area has eroded into the sea and very little remains of it today), the farm at Hornsea Burton apparently remained within the family into the 1800s. By the late 1700s, the family seems to have owned/retained (?) land in a number of places in Yorkshire Co. so locating records and tracking family movement has been a bit tricky at times. For example: 1756 Robert Whiteing's diary traces his movements as "went to live at Welwick (near Patringston) in 1779...left Welwick at Lady Day, 1785, for Preston...went to live at Hornsea, occupied Hornsea Burton farm, 1803...went to live at Beverley Parks, 1810...left Beverley Parks and went to Beverley..." all places where the family was known to have owned property. Also, the family's habit of recycling certain given names, generation after generation, adds to the research difficulty. Sometimes cousins, close in age, had the same names and lived out their lives in the same towns. At this point we do not know when and where 1620 Robert was born for sure, the names of his parents and siblings (or even if he had siblings) much less where they lived. We do know that there were other Whiteings living in this region of Yorkshire Co. (or ERY - East Riding Yorkshire as it is known today) at even earlier dates, so linking our family to this 1620 Robert has meet with some problems. For example: * Rick Rodgers records show that 1620 Robert's grandson "Richard Whiteing" was the father of 1729 Robert Whiteing. * Grand-Uncle Charlie Whiteing's records show 1620 Robert's grandson "1687 John Whiteing", the eldest brother of Richard, as 1729 Robert's father. Margaret G. (Whitton) Owst of Kirk Ella, Yorkshire Co. England has traced her lineage back to a mid-1700 born Jane Whiteing in Beverley Yorkshire, whom we thought was the eldest daughter (1761 Jane Whiteing) of 1729 Robert Whiteing and Hannah Gibson. In researching the MIs (Monument Inscriptions) for Beverley Minister Church and the the PRs (Parish Records) of Beverley, we discovered that 1729 Robert and Hannah's daughter, 1761 Jane, died as an infant in 1762. Margaret's Jane Whiteing, married abt. 1780, so she was obviously not who we thought she was originally. While we have had to remove the valuable data, that Margaret so kindly shared, from the previous version of the descendants list for our Family Tree, we have posted it here as a "Whiteing Tree Attachment" until we can establish her Jane's link to our Tree Today there are only a few known descendants of our Tree still living in Yorkshire. A number of lines have simply died out completely, while others have moved on to other counties in England or other countries by the 1900s. At present the largest group of Yorkshire Whiteing descendants seems to be in the USA. But this is not to say that all US Whiteings are from our Tree F or that all our Tree's decendants, living outside of England, live in the USA. For those interested in our Whiteing Tree, I have placed a number of "special interest pages" at this site that you might want to check out. Just CLICK on the page of choice: |
