Whiteing...with an E

~ This page is dedicated to Charles Andrew Whiteing, 1893 ~ 1976 Family Genealogist ~
According to "cousin" Peter Whiteing, of Buckinghamshire, England, who has researched the origins of the surname "Whiteing":
"... it predates the Norman Conquest. Of the three main Germanic tribes which invaded Britain ( Angles, Saxon, and the Jutes), the appellation "White, Whyte, Whit, Whyt or even Hwit" would seem to be Jute! The "ing" simply means "of the family or tribe". (In other words: Whiteing means "of the family or tribe of White") The Jutish brothers "Hengist and Horsa" were the earliest invaders in the year 447 AD, settling in the south eastern counties of Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight (another form of White)." (quote)

In researching the name "Whiteing"; you will discover that among both old and new offical records it is misspelled on a regular basis! This oviously makes things all the more difficult in light of the fact that the surnames of the Whiting, Whitting, etc. families were also being misspelled as well, sometimes as Whiteing. It is therefore never safe to assume, based on the spelling of this surname in a record of any century, that an individual is or isn't a "Whiteing"!

My "Grand-Uncle Charlie in California" got me hooked on genealogy as a teen, and our family has been very fortunate in that he shared his data from his own extensive collection of genealogy records with many.

When I was a child, I was told that if I should ever meet anyone who spelled their last name as we did (with an E) that they were sure to be a relative of some sort. And so it would seem! Research seems to indicate that all Whiteing families located outside of England can trace their surname's origin back to England. Not all of the current "Whiteing" branches around the world came directly from England to the country they are now established in. We know from old ship passenger listings and other records that many branches left England, settled in other countries for a time then went on to the countries where their lines currently live.

When my great-grandparents, Sarah Jane (North) and Andrew Whiteing left Yorkshire County, England in 1870 for the USA, there were already members of our branch, as well as other Whiteing branches recorded as living in about a dozen different states, including an African-American branch.

This past year I have collected a pile of data on these earlier families in the USA and while I know that these "other" branches still exist in the USA, I have no information that links these current families to these earlier branches or their origins. The primary reason being that I have not heard from any of these branches in response to my mailings.

So PLEASE, if you are one of these Whiteings, or have a "Whiteing" somewhere on your family tree, contact me! Any information that you can provide, even if it's just a few generations back, would be pieces to this puzzle that we don't have!

Because of those who "harvest" email addresses from sites like mine for SPAM lists, I can no longer provide a clickable "mailto" link or present my email address in a form that can be "cut & pasted" off the page. I am sorry for this inconvenience to those who have visited my site for family research purposes. Please find my new email address posted at the bottom of this page.
