Known to an increasing number of Whiteings around the world as "Uncle Charlie in California"; one of his greatest accomplishments was his family genealogy research that consisted of records
dating back to 1483. Although "Uncle Charlie" compiled his genealogy data on the Whiteings in an era that predated home computers and the internet, his collection of records still surpasses anything that those who carry on his work today have accomplished. In fact, his records serve as the main frame that most researchers of his branch work from, and constitute decades of research on his part. Charles Andrew Whiteing was born near Vail, in Crawford County Iowa on January 18, 1893 and died March 15, 1976 in Pasadena, California at the age of 83. He was the youngest of nine children born to English emigrants Sarah Jane (North) and Andrew Whiteing. He accompanied his parents to California in 1909 when they left Iowa after farming there for 39 years. The family settled in the Los Angeles area, and he obtained employment with the Santa Fe Railroad for four years before changing his occupation to the printing trade. He served in World War I, in the Navy, and several years after returning home, he bought his own print shop which he operated until World War II. At that point, he returned to the Railway Express Agency and worked there till his retirement in 1959. "Uncle Charlie" married Lily Newman in 1920, and had two sons: Richard Andrew (1921) and George Robert (1922) before her death in 1922. In 1938, on Christmas morning, he married Martha Agnes Fleming. On his death in 1976, he was survived by his wife, Martha, his two sons, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, his older brother Herbert and his parent's many other descendants.
