NOTE: Most of these books are American and
concentrate on ferrets kept as pets in the house. Most British
books assume you will keep your ferret in a hutch in the garden.
However, many American books advocate descenting
and some even present it as being essential. This is not the
case at all and is not recommended. A ferret’s "every day"
odour is not reduced by descenting – to do this you must neuter
your pet and change his her/bedding at least once a week,
plus a bath once a month or so. Descenting simply removes
the ability to "create a stink" when scared or angry and this
should be a rare event.
