The Salvation Army was founded in 1865, in London, by a Methodist Minister named William Booth. He dedicated his life to bringing people to God and to bettering the life of the poor. His ministry caught on when the movement adopted a military attitude about "the war against evil", as well as a military style of organization.

Today, Salvationists are organized as soldiers and officers. The officers are ordained when they receive their commission of lieutenant, and they wear a uniform. Soldiers may also choose to wear the uniform which proclaims the commitment, Christian faith, and availability, "to anyone needing a helping hand and a listening ear", of the wearer. Men and women are trained and promoted equally in the Salvation Army.
