"Kimi & the Dog Days of Summer! (the sequel)"
    Look out Brigs!

    Copyright © 1998 - by Kristi Day

The heat of our summer days have cooled to the temperate of fall. Our nights have cooled to a chilling point and serves to chase away the heat of our afternoons. All this allows for an extended peroid of play time in Kimi's heart. Much to the chagrin of poor old Brigs and his worn out tail. Yes my friends the saga of Kimi and his tail continues to unfold. This girl of ours does not give up easily, especially when there is still much fun to be had. As I sit here watching their lives intertwine I am reminded of how much of a difference there is in their size, personalities, coloring, in fact just about everything about them is a complete contradiction to one another. Yet, they manage to over-come those differences and have formed a friendship. One based on mutual respect, tolerance and okay, I'll say it doggone it.....love. Sometimes when I watch the simple lives our furry friends live I am surprised that we humans continue to call ourselves the "intelligent" species. Kimi still hasn't learned what the soul purpose of this furry wagging fun thing called a "tail" that swings and thumps along behind her friend Brigs is for. Or maybe she has and has just decided she can find a better use for it if he isn't going to use it much. After all ...why waste a perfectly good item on someone who rarely looks at it anyway? Which once again proves her point in not passing up something that you might not ever consider having fun with....who knows...it could become your best friend! One mans trash is another mans treasure you know. And so we come to this. One more "dog day afternoon". Brigs is once again laying in the waning sunlight, basking in its realtive warmth. Relieved to have *his* sun back after two days of rain. His heavy lips flop on each snore like air passing thru a flattened tire. With each whistling thundering noise coming from the mouth of her huge furry friend, Kimi lays beside him, totally in awe of this creature. One particularly loud rumbling noise passes thru betwen his floundering lips and Kimi throws back her head in laughter. Her grin wide, pink tongue lolling from the corner of her upturned lips, she throws her pointy nose over one shoulder and laughs into my face. In the beginning she was content to lay quietly near her sleeping friend and just watch, but we know Kimi is not one to hang in the back ground un-noticed for long. I could already see the wheels of play beginning to turn inside her active little mind. As she lay there near him with this ear to ear grin and watched him snore and grumble his way through his nap, her own laughter bubbled up inside of her. Kimi stretched her neck over to his nose and poked him once.....prodding him to see if he truly sleeps or was just playing 'possum with her. Not moving or changing his breathing patterns at this, Kimi raised her front right paw out and slowly slid it forward until it just reached the side of his face. She dropped her chin down on her left paw and rolled her eyes. First toward me, then toward Brigs....then back to her right paw. And as she laid there pondering her next move, her right paw took on a life of it's own and moved itself. I know Kimi didn't have anthing to do with this because as her paw lifted from the ground her ears perked straight up. Her eyes widened as if she couldn't believe what she was seeing! Her own foot was moving itself and she didn't have a THING to do with that! Honest! As her foot raised higher, her ears stood up more. Then as it made a quick slapping move....right down onto Brig's limp right upper lip her eyes popped open wide! Talk about a shocked looked of innocense! Her head snapped up, she nosed her own foot where it still lay, pinning his lip to the ground, then quickly looked at me with bright questioning eyes. "Yes Kimi dear, I saw that foot of yours move..and no I don't beleive you did it either!" I laughed at her. Kimi's eyes danced with delight as her mouth moved in a soundless conversation with me. I watched as her foot began to wiggled around, moving back and forth as she kept a wary but amused eye on it herself. Kimi stood up, still watching her own foot as if not quite trusting it to not do anything really bad, and she slowly walked around Brigs. Still unaware of what had been happening around him as he lay napping, he continued to slumber in his fools paradise. Slowly she walked around his resting form, her nose to the ground but eyes watchful for any sign of life. Occasionally she would poke him in the pretense of a sniff, and still he didn't move. Kimi approached the heavy ear covering his eyes, blocking out the glare of the sun, and with steady lips, she plucked at the long hairs growing there. Carefully lifting it up between her tightly clenched lips, I can almost believe she was trying to peer under this leathery cover to see if his eyes were indeed shut! Oh so carefully she pulled on his ear until she had coaxed it into sliding just a wee bit to the left...looking at him with her shiney eyes, and not seeing his yet, she moved it a bit more. Finally uncovering his eye enough to see that it was indeed shut, she let his ear slap down on the side of his face. THWAP! Kimi looked back up to me and grinned again. Now why is it that at about this time I got that old familiar "Oh Kimi no" feeling again? She ducked her little head and turned around. Moving cautiously to the...uh..rear flank on Brigs, I watched her keeping her nose low. As she spotted just what it was she was looking for, her grin grew bigger and her eyes lit up. His poor poor tail. Kimi stretched her neck out.......just a bit. A little more...MORE........ Then I watched her lips try to do the same. Moving just the tips of both lips together at once, she tried plucking at a few errant stray hairs on the end of his tail. Finally managing to get a hold of a few, Kimi picked them up. Raising her head higher, Brigs tail slowly lifting with it, I had to wonder how she was going to get a better hold on his tail without dropping it again. For if she dropped it, it would surely wake him up and we have all heard about how you should let sleeping dogs lie right? Well, not to fear. Our innovative little Kimi had it all figured out. Flicking her head up quickly and to the left, she tossed Brig's tail up into the air and before it could land again she had caught it! Grinning hugely around her mouth full of hair Kimi slowly backed her way up until she had his tail levitated between her teeth and his rump. Giving his tail a couple of quick hard yanks, testing it for hold, strength, and maybe taste, I watched Kimi's ears flip-flop as she yanked on it. As she gave his tail one mighty tug I heard Brigs groan. Kimi must have heard it to for her whole body froze in mid motion. Grinning a little broader, she waited for a split second then gave it one huge mighty pull, let it go so it dropped with a loud THUNK and ran for all she could to the other side of the yard. It's a good thing she did too, for as quickly as one can when one is this big, Brigs jumped to his feet and whirled from left to right..looking for the source of this latest irritation. Not finding her immediately close by, he lifted his huge dark head and began a broader search for her. Kimi helped out from where she stood by the fence with a sharp "YIP!". Looking her way I had to laugh at her impishness when I saw that teasing grin on her face. Her eyes simply sparkled with the mishief coursing through her body. That sparkle of joy quickly turned to one of shock and probably horror though when with a tree bending "WOOF!" Brigs took off at a lumbering run.....RIGHT FOR KIMI!!!!!!!!!! Her head rose high in shock...her tiny mouth dropped open in surprise, and still he headed straight for her petite little self! I could almost see her begin to tremble, and indeed I too stood up. Trusting Brigs to be a fair and gentle dog, still I knew he had to be at the end of his patience with her soon. His large black body had almost reached her quivering one.......Kimi's eyes had grown to large for her face, just as I was about to shout his name, Brigs slammed on his brakes and slid to a stop thru the grass in front of her. His nose reached out the last few inches to hers and as suddenly as this frontal attack had begun, it was over. Almost. He had to issue one last "WOOF!" into her face, blowing her ears and hair back with the blast of air that came from deep within his chest. Her shocked look turned to one of laughter as she threw her head up and back as this hot blast scoured her face. Brigs then whirled around and like a lumbering freight train came barreling around the house at me! AT ME??!!!!!!! NO BRIGS! DOWN BOY! DOWN!!!!!! THERE'S A GOOD DOG!!!! WHEW! Another fake out by Brigs. Kimi couldn't be left out of all the fun though so she had to give it a try. She let out a sharp "YIP!" (bonzia) and headed straight for Brigs...as fast as her tiny white legs could go. Brigs dropped his head down to watch her run at him, then looked back up at me in confusion. I laughed and patted him on the head while asking him to just go along with it. So here comes Kimi, running like a speedster across the yard headed right for Brigs with an intense look of concentration on her face. Barreling at him like a run away locomotive I had to wonder....was she going to try to knock HIM over? Or just intimidate him into thinking he was about to be tackled? Green Bay look out, I think we have a new defensive tight end for you! Here she comes....closer.........closer..........she's almost here........LOOK OUT BRIGS....she's gonna run right ov.....uh..under you! Yep........she did. With a look of full concentration plastered to her grin, looking as though she fully intended to run right over the top of him.......she ducked and went under him insteadI Why she had to duck I could not figure out for his belly clears the ground by a good foot and a half at least and she is only ten inches tall. Aaaahhh but our little speedster is also a sneakster! She had a new trick up her furry little sleeve after all! Instead of running all the way under him and coming out alone on the other side....she came out alright ...WITH A MOUTH FULL OF TAIL!!!!!!!!! As soon as Kimi ran under him, Brigs looked up at me questioningly. It was right about then that Kimi hit the end of tat tail with it firmly grasped between her pearly whites. It was about then that Brigs felt a HUGE jerk on the end of that poor ragged tail of his. Now, I never before realized this, but did you all know that the end of a dogs tail is actually connected to their eye lids? Sure it is! Next time you pull on one watch to see what their eyes do! Kimi jerked hard on the end of that tail and Brig's eyes popped open wide! The harder she pulled the wider they got. When she would release it enough to let some slack in it, his eyes would go back to a normal position. Kimi jerked on it again and his eyes bugged open again. I called out her name sharply and she stopped long enough to give me a huge grin around all that black fur in her mouth. Undaunted by my reprimand to let go of that tail, Kimi tossed that tiny little head of hers, let out a muffled "Yimmppff!" (nope..not gonna do it!) and laughed around the hair Backing up as far as his tail would allow for , Kimi then dug in her back feet and pulled slowly, but fiercely. She stood there for the barest of seconds, rolling her shining eyes around in that busy little head of hers as though she were testing his tail for strength. Then she jerked on it. Not once. Not twice, but over and over and with each jerk she went "EERR!" I know she was grinning that by now famous grin of hers, but one would never know it with all the black hair poking out around her mouth. She looked like she had a beard! Brigs tried to whirl around to find her, but Kimi held on like a cowboy, wrestling a steer and as he swung his rump to the left, she swung her body to the right. Jumping to the left Brigs tried to shake her off of his tail. Jumping quickly to the right, Kimi hung on for the ride. Then she tried something I hadn't seen her do before. Sneaky little devil-in-disguise that she is, Kimi then moved back up under Brigs, with his tail still in her mouth. Now not only could he not reach her, but he couldn't see her either. He could definitely still feel her though for she still had a death grip on the end of that tail and was still pulling on it for all she was worth. Finally Brigs got smart and ducked his own head, looking under himself from between his front legs. I watched and wondered what was going to happen next as I saw him trying to reach her from underneath himself. The harder she pulled on his tail, the farther under himself he tried to reach. Just as he opened his mouth to make a grab for her tail, Kimi jerked as hard as she could. Just as Kimi jerked his tail, Brigs lunged his chin a little further into his own chest. Talk about a chain reaction! The whole thing unsettled Brigs on his feet and as his head was tucked way under, his body had no where to go but over in the clumsiest sort of summersault I have ever watched. Letting out a startled yelp, which then shocked Kimi into letting go, Brigs rolled on over his own shoulders. I yelled for Kimi to look out, she scrambled to safety and Brigs landed in an ungainly heap, long legs going every which direction. Kimi's eyes were wide with shock, and then her funny bone kicked in and she gave us that breathy little laugh of hers as she ran around to find his face in all that mass confusion. Brigs laid there in tolerant defeat, letting Kimi poke fun with her nose into his face, knowing she was only checking to make sure her friend wasn't hurt in any way. And I stood there taking pity on my giant furry friend while trying hard not to laugh at the look on his face. One look pretty much said it all. "I give up, let her have the darned thing, I will just grow myself a new one!" I patted him on the face and told him what a good boy he was to be so patient with his baby sister, which he replied with a long and loud self suffering groan of compliance. Brigs placed his big paw in my hand taking my comfort as Kim,i on the other hand simply sat back on her haunches and shouted "YIP!" (get up games not over!) Her little head cocked to the right as she watched him, her puppy impatience growing as she waited for him to clamber to his feet so the games could continue. Seeing that he wasn't moving or cooperating, Kimi moved to take matters into her own paws again. She yipped at Brigs to give him one last chance or one last warning I'm not sure which, then moved to the step. Climbing up on the step, she slowly turned around. Eye-balling him intently, then looking at the ground, then the step, I had to wonder what my pint sized imp was up to next. I could almost read her inquisitive little mind when she looked up to me and grinned. Tossing her head back she yipped at me as if to say "Watch me mommy!". Unfortunately I wasn't able to figure out what all of this meant in time. Kimi drew back onto her back legs a bit, then with a mighty "YIP!" (BONZIA!) she launched herself up in to the air, sailing off the step, flying thru the air......landing......right ...on BRIGS! "OOAFF!" he says as she makes his breath rush out of his lungs (well, ok..now I know how to do the Heimlech on a Newfoundland). As his head came up off the ground in surprise, Kimi took off across the yard and around the corner of the house in a dead run. Which then launched off another round of a MAD PUPPY RUN!!!!!!!!!!! Around the house she went, feet flying in a blur, ears laid back and fur flapping in the wind she generated around herself, Kimi kicked off another round of fun. With her dog tags jingling madly, one can now keep an ear tuned to what direction she will be coming from and sure enough here she comes...back from where she went! Up and over Brigs she flew, her feet never touching him this time. Running in mid-air still, her feet propelling her forward quickly once they made contact with terra-firma again. Rushing down the fence line toward the bird feeder Kimi sparked off a flurry of feathers as all the feeding sparrows took to wings. Kimi got caught up in their flight and began bouncing along behind them yipping and yapping while obviously trying to take to flight with them. Being 'grounded' Kimi couldn't catch the air waves as her feathered friends could, but not thru lack of trying! Across the back yard she flew, hanging a sharp 180 degree turn around the tree, narrowly missing the rocks laying at the bottom of this tree. Heading back my direction I could see this ear to ear grin of total abandon she sported, her tongue curling from the left corner of her mouth. Coming up to the downspout, Kimi leaped high in to the air giving the impression she was an olympic athlete instead of a puppy jumping a 5 inch tall downspout. Giving off a loud "GGGRRR!" when she landed on the otherside, Kimi kept going, never missing a step. Past Brigs she flew, nipping at his big leathery ear she she ran by, Kimi picked up speed. Rounding the corner on the sidewalk, disaster struck with lightening speed. Was it the water from yesterdays rain? Was there an unseen oil slick? Or was it just simplya case of the puppy- clumsies? Whatever it was, Kimi lost traction as she rounded this tight corner while going full tilt. Her feet lost their grip on the concrete, her back end slid to the left and her front end came 'round to the back end. Kimi's look of fun turned to one of horror was she realized she was about to lose it....right near...OH NO! TO CLOSE! LOOK OUT KIMI!!!!!! KERSPLASH! Kimi managed to find the one remaining puddle of water left from yesterdays storm. It wasn't a big puddle, barely enough water in it to drown a flea, but when one slides thru it, belly down it tends to create a wave. Which causes the water to fly up into the air. And hover there for a split second. Long enough for Kimi to slide right under where it was going to come back down! SPLOOSH! And down it came...right on top of Kimi's head! As the rain water dripped down over her tiny little face giving her a completely bedraggled appearance, I laughed. Out loud. My poor little drowned rat did not take to kindly to my amusement of her behalf either. Kimi got to her feet, shook herself off and strutted past me indignant to the bone. Holding her head in an outraged belief of insulted pride, Kimi refused to look at me. Not even to give me one of her "looks" that speak volumes in it's silence. As she trotted by, I reached down to scoop her up and cuddle her close to me. Soggy wet fur and all, I kissed her and told her not to worry, that we'd have her cleaned up and dried off in no time. Kimi then proceeded to rub her head all over my shoulder, and turned her body over in my arms, making sure all her wetness was shared thoroughly with mommy. Figuring that nothing in life was a really bad thing when you have someone to share it with Kimi to this understanding: Don't sweat the small stuff, and everything is small stuff!" walk in beauty Kristi, Kimi & Brigs
