Time Line: The 1970's
Okay, I can't say too much about the
70's. I was born during that decade and therefore was too young to
remember anything. History books tell us that the Vietnam War was
just ending. Nixon resigned, Ford was sworn in. Then we elected
a peanut farmer from Georgia as president. The gas crisis happened.
Here is an event timeline from that decade:
May 4, 1970: 4
Kent State University students are slain by National Guardsmen at a Vietnam
protest.
1971: 26th Amendment to the
Constitution lowers the voting age to 18.
April 20, 1971: Supreme Court
rules unianimously that busing of students may be used in order to achieve
racial desegregation.
October 1, 1971: Disney World
in Orlando, Florida, opens to the public.
Feb, 1972: Nixon visits China.
May 15, 1972: George Wallace
is shot while on a campaign stop in Maryland
June 17, 1972: Watergate break-in
occurs
September 5, 1972: Eleven
Israeli athletes are killed at the Olympic Games in Munich by an Arab guerrilla
terrorist group.
October 6, 1973: Spiro Agnew
resigns as VP, then pleads no contest to tax evasion charges.
August 8, 1974: Nixon resigns
August 9, 1974: Gerald Ford
is sworn in as President.
September 8, 1974: Ford pardons

April 30, 1975: The last American
troops are evacuated from Vietnam.
June 6, 1975: South Vietnam
falls to Communists forces.
July 15, 1975: Apollo and Soyuz
take off for U.S.-Soviet link up in space.
September 5 and 17, 1975:

July 4, 1976: U.S. Bicentennial
May 25, 1977: Star Wars is
released
August 16, 1977: Elvis Presley
dies
September 17, 1978: U.S. sponsored
Camp David Peace Accords signed by Egypt and Israel.
Feburary 1, 1979: Iranian fundamentalists
under the direction of Ayatollah Khomeini seize control of Iran
March 28, 1979: Three
Mile
Island nuclear accident occurs
November 4, 1979: Iranian
militants seize U.S. Embassy in Tehran and hold hostages.
December 27, 1979: Soviets
